The Scoop
You can always count on CdG to release fabulous fragrances that run the gamut from drop dead gorgeous to just plain odd (Tar, anyone?) and we love ‘em for that. Interestingly enough, we put Play in a place where CdG doesn’t normally tread: simple. Simple in that it’s a humble fragrance featuring a classic combination of citrus, herb and warm earthy notes but with CdG’s ultra modern edge. It’s effortless and casual and in-line with CdG’s clothing line of the same name (casual, easy wear.) Just when you think you have Play pegged, the unexpected saffron and sea notes bring a whole new breeze of freshness and warmth, turning this into a bottle of super attractive, lighthearted fun. You know how sometimes you smell a fragrance and you mentally conjure an image of a wearer? Play transcends that…we can honestly say there’s not a person no matter the age, hair color, gender or personality that this wouldn’t smell absolutely perfect on.

When first put on it smelled overwhelmingly of citrus to the point that it was quite unpleasant. The dry down was absolutely wonderful and subtle though (if you can wait the 5 minutes it takes for the lemon stink to dissipate). Lovely and light and lasts quite awhile.

I got the sample of this. Really like it, just not for me. I'm giving it to my boyfriend. It's a very manly fragrance in my opinion.

I'm a huge fan of the CDG fragrances (#3, rhubarb, guerilla 2, #2, white, avignon and 53 are some of my all time favorite scents) but something about play did not work with my chemistry. Many of the CDG scents are anchored with an incredible cedar accord, and Play had some of that but combined with an herbacious note that on my skin smelled like mildewed wet hay. It smells lovely out of the bottle, but it's a very specific scent of country meadows that lacks the abstract luminosity of some of the other CDG scents. But if you like the scent of green hills and have the right chemistry this might work well for you.

On CdG's spectrum of drop-dead gorgeous to odd scents, I'd definitely classify Play more on the odd side. Intriguing list of notes but the end result is disappointingly simple. It opens with lemon and quickly develops into that synthetic, ozonic scent a la Odeur 71 we've all smelled from CdG many times before. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is the lack of originality.

Lemony light puff chiffon opening leads to a carefree clean scent that reminds me of the earlier CdG smells. A little Dry Clean + Soda + Odoer 71 + ozone. It's not citrus and not green and not woody and not any normal fragrance odor - it's easy to describe what it's not. It's mostly background. A very fresh, light and slightly milky odor. I like it. Good for summer heat.

This is a respectable low key addition to CdG should appeal to some fans of the line, not as much others. Certainly a more notable addition than the guerrilas were. Worth a try! (It has some feint notes that remind me very much of the series whichever synthetics "soda" these feint notes are among the most prominent for me here. If the idea of a much lighter and a bit more complicated version of "soda" should appeal to you then this one's most definitely worth a try.) The Adolf Wölfli-ish logo is cute. I don't think I'll buy this one but I'd be tickled and happy to receive it as a gift!

On me, it smelled exactly of lotus and sea salt. Lovely but a bit sweet and what happened to all those spices and herbs? Where have they gone? Watery lotus. Ho Hum.

at first whiff, loved it. it lasts and it didn't change or become weaker, just stayed the same. but yet there was something about it that bothered me. i finally figured it out, hours later, it reminds me of quarzazate. not something i want to smell all the time. not for me.

Play smelled lovely upon the initial application. The bitter orange, green and aquatic notes stood out with a perfect hint of spice from the black pepper. It was another CdG winner and I was happy. Unfortunately, the dry down took a terrible detour and I was just left with cheap smelling (and very strong) patchouli with a dash of black pepper. All the other wonderful notes were nowhere to be found. It must be my skin chemistry. It’s too bad it turned out so horrid because the lasting power was long even after washing my wrists.

Lemony & aquatic opening quieting down to a soft herbal medly of sage and saffron. It's pleasant and one of the best CdG scents I've tried, but I find it better suited for a man. It's too "sporty" for me.

Starts off as a typical lemony summer scent and dries down to a very smart complex scent thats wearable in any season. Worth a try.

A beautiful and very wearable summer scent. Clean and crisp; good for both men and woman. Starts off very citrus but fades to a clean fresh aroma. Truly unlike any other CdG cologne. Will easily become a favorite for everyone, a must buy.
