Scent Bar Staff Video Review for The Soft Lawn

Video Transcript

Imaginary Authors has just released a new version of one of their classic fragrances, The Soft Lawn. This is version two, and every time I smell this fragrance I get the impression that I'm at a country club in the 1920s and I'm watching two people battle it out on a tennis court and there is a note in here of fresh tennis balls.

In the original, that was very prominent. The base notes were very clear, especially on the dry down, but overall it was this clay court tennis ball fragrance. In this new version, Josh has put a little bit more emphasis on those really bright, fresh top notes. You still have the Linden Blossom, which was in the first one, but you also have this note of grapefruit, which gives it a brightness and a juiciness.

It's very smooth, very easy to wear. I would say at least six hours, if not more, new from Imaginary Authors.

(Almost) all is as it should be, fresh, clean, summer afternoon scent, perfect for the sunny day, breezy afternoon, Everything I want. Except. There is an overriding essence of artificial something that permeates the air with the lovely fragrance. Halfway perfect, halfway a total failure.

I smelled this in a store and thought the green notes were lovely. I sprayed it again when I got home and all I could smell was plastic (I assume this is the tennis ball accord) and it gave me a raging headache. I have truly never hated a fragrance more. I spent 10 minutes trying to wash it off my skin, but I could still smell it the rest of the evening. It's not overpowering, but it hangs in the background faintly which in a way, is worse, it leaves this lingering sense of something wrong. I think as a whole, from their cheap looking bottles to unwearable novelty fragrances, Imaginary Authors is deeply, deeply not for me.

I loved this fragrance when I smelled it in the store at Scent Bar during my visit in LA last month (which I left with 4 perfumes that I adore, if you want an amazing green fragrance try Jorum Paradisi). Anyway, It was out of stock in the store, so I ordered it when I got home. It was backordered, so I had to wait a bit for it to arrive, and to my dismay this fragrance only smelled of vetiver and bug spray… completely different than what I initially got my nose on. Not sure what happened here, but this fragrance is not wearable at all for me. Very unfortunate, as I’ve always had wins from Scent Bar and Lucky Scent prior to this. I don’t get any of the notes listed and it just smells very strong of bug repellent. Bummed.

I’m obsessed with this fragrance house. Everything is so unique. If you’re getting the feeling like you’re tired of all fragrances smelling the same, give this house a try. It’s just FUN. Keep up the good work IA!! Keep taking risks. Your branding is also impeccable, best (most cool) perfume boxes I’ve ever received and my collection is over 250.

The Soft Lawn is a wonderfully lazy drawn out scent. None of the notes attempt to outdo each other. The softness of the fragrance doesn't mean it lacks stamina. It continues to meander it's soft fresh earthy green scent throughout the day as if you were not sitting at your desk, but with your mind outside to bummell a leafy avenue or park still filled with clover not yet mowed.
