Odeur 71
Eau de Toilette
by Comme des Garcons

The Scoop
The ultimate anti-perfume. The notes are inspired by dust on a hot lightbulb, bamboo, metal, electricity and lettuce juice…no lie! But what does it smell like? Surprisingly, it's a completely wearable scent; metal and electricity manifest as the invigorating smell of ozone just before a storm, and the combination of we-don't-know-what makes for a familiar soapy freshness. Hot laundry right out of the dryer served up on your clean, sexy Xerox machine. Released in 2000, Odeur 71 continues to make huge stir-not just for its revolutionary scent structure, but because it's a testament that a combination of the truly weird can make a truly fantastic fragrance.

This particular scent wears very well, and goes through subtle variances as the day goes by...I have personally found that it reaches it's "peak" after a couple hours on the body and gives off it's best.

It's a well crafted fragrance that delivers a herbacious and harmonious blend that captures the imagination. It's clean but what is so intriguing is it smells of tea, and has drier note of what smells like tobacco, and a barely perceptible hint of peppery bee balm. Also mix in a splash of downy wafting out of a drier vent at the same time. I guess what people call ozone is what I liken to the fact that this airy fragrance has a dynamic quality that almost breathes with you because each inhalation is different as the moments pass. It smells like a man after he takes a shower and before he puts his deoderant on, which is to say that it's familiar but totally unique all at once.

it smells very masculine on me... definitely not my type of scent..

so sad... this smells like a cool-toned chanel no. 5 on me... really, i have one on each hand right now to compare. not getting any hot lightbulb at all... the little bit of ozone is nice, but the intense cool/masculine feel is too much for me. i'll stick with CDG 3...

to me it smells like pencil shavings, not in a bad way. like the soft warm wood smell but also the metallic smell of the graphite. all in all it is a little too cool-toned for my taste, reminiscent of those "sport" fragrances, with only a bit more depth and interest.

I've been wearing this since it came out, and I absolutely love it. It makes me feel sexy and it's a scent that not many people even know about, so you feel totally unique

smells like the 80's. close your eyes and smell it. it is a little strange and unusual like day-glo socks and sideways pony tails definately unique

Love this scent. I don't get anything burning as expected nor do I smell dust on a hot light bulb; and I have enough dust on my light bulbs to know the smell. I do think that this smells like Odeur 53 but more serious and manly. It knocks 53 out of the ring. this being said I love 53. 2 amazing scents.

John from Boston has his definition of synesthesia wrong, and not sure how it's germane to the review of this fragrance, although as a synaesthetic, I can tell you that this fragrance smells like a wound cut with warm glass. And that's a good thing. (John, if you can taste the color blue, you might be a synaesthetic. Everyone can imagine how dish soap tastes just by smelling it, however.)

Every scent is unique to each individual, so this is just one womans opinion/experience, I thought it smelt like an incontinent old woman, so its not for me.....

Synesthesia is a scientific phenomena of the five senses where the stimulus of of sense creates an unintended automatic response in another sense. Sorta like you you can taste dish washing liquid by smelling it. If you know the feeling of a hot lamp or light bulb this would be the smell. Has to be experienced.

it smells refreshing, unique, undefineable, sweet, not too sweet at all, ozone before the rain, refreshing, copy machine, refreshing, soap shreds. ? smells like an easy going girl. i deal it 5 stars.

This is my fav new "scent" if you can call it that. It makes the deepest parts of your pelvis quiver a bit and evokes an exciting & provocative feeling within the core of you. Flash of metal - indeed. I won't stray far from #71. Its a wonderful experience & feeling for those around you (and the one wearing it)!

Fades to oblivion very quickly on me. (tear)

When I first put this on it was somewhat overwhelming, but the drydown makes it completely wearable. It definitely has an ozone element to it. I think it smells a little too manly for me.

I like it better than 53, probably because it has more natural notes and is less "clean" and "cool" and "fresh", although it is that too. Faint and artificial and nondescript but if I inhale deeply a get a whiff of something intriguing. Perhaps a hint of woods and leaves and the slightest touch of incense? A little sharper than 53.

The best CDG scent. Smells like burned gel filters on me, like warm field during hot summer day, like the air just before the storm (true!) and it lasts very long. Very unique, "technical" yet natural, sexy fragrance :) **************!

I love this fragrance, I have worn it for a few years. 71* reminds me of dark secrets, dirty thoughts, unspoken kisses...the scent of a naked man against you. Moss, earth and spice. This scent is powerful*** and will remind you of whoever you were once with when you wear 71* make sure its a person you won't want to forget.

When I read the reviews, I had to try this scent. I absolutely love it. It goes on a little strong and chemical-like, but once it settles the olfactory party begins. I had people on the street stop me and ask what I'm wearing, but beware, you either love this scent or hate it. I found no one in between!

Now I know what they mean when they call it an Anti-perfume, a very bold and daring blend...unplaceble and yet oddly familiar, it's deffinately a departure from the scent counter at your local department store...when I first sprayed it on...I really didnt like it...I was overwhelmed with the smell of ozone and somehting that smelled a bit like vacuum bands...but as it dried down, a sort of botanical scent began to creep through...not floral, but deffinately green...very refreshing...the ozone is still present, but much more subdued, and fresh smelling...there's a slight unplaceable sweetness mixed with a tinge of saltyness which seems to get a bit more prevalent as time goes by......you can deffinately smell a bit of "copy machine" but it comes through a just a whisp of something mysterious rather than easily identifiable as a copy machine.. as the day progresses, you'll pick up on different things...the lettuce juice really comes through about an hour or so after spraying it...very fresh smelling, but not so much like a fresh smelling cologne...more like fresh in the sense of a produce market early in the morning, or a rainforest after a storm...upon smelling this scent on you...nobody will say you stink...but I doubt they'll ask you what cologne you are wearing...perhaps they'll just think you smell like this naturally...it smells good, but deffinately not like your typical cologne (see hat I mean??? Anti-perfume)...I'd deffinately recommend this for the avant guarde lover of non-traditional scents...

Fresh and uplifting. Reminded me of light machine oil from my mothers sewing machine. Then I realized it smells like a more delicate version of WD-40! Really does!

Fresh, metallic, cold, and very strange. I love tryinging the CdG fragrances, because even if I don't love them, they always intrigue me. This one isn't me, but it's always fun conjuring up what exactly Odeur 71 smells like.

Dust on a hot lightbulb? Electricity? Of course I had to sniff this...and so did my husband. He fell in love with it immediately! This scent alone turned him intoa CdG fanatic. Oddly fresh, yet chemical, but in a good way. Intriguing. Delightfully wearable. This is a scent that draws you closer to sniff again and again, just for the thrill of catching another strange but interesting note. Mysterious and wacky and fun.

Mandy Aftel should take lessons from Rei Kawakubo, who makes the unthinkable wearable. The only other scent that smells even remotely like this is Cinnamon, from the Sherbet line also by CdG. This does smell like freshly inked paper from a Xerox machine, but it totally works and is strangely compelling. Can't stop sniffing my wrist!

I recently got this as a gift and I LOVE it. In fact, my friends and I were a little dissappointed as from the description we were all hoping it would smell awful. Dust on a lightbulb? It is really wonderful and quite wearable.
