Odeur 53
Eau de Toilette
by Comme des Garcons

The Scoop
Mission: a scent that nobody recognized. Abstract. Lack of a been there, done that snooze-fest.

In 1998, CdG stepped away from natural ingredients, seeking to clone the ultra-modern straight outta the manmade world. The result? Fifty three non-traditional notes comprise this masterpiece, resulting in a very recognizable scent of crisp air mixing with cotton-drying-in-the-wind. We think it smells like a brand-new car and warm, soft human skin-perfection. You may think it sounds strange until you realize just how many of the notes of Odeur 53 you know (and love). 'Cept for the nail polish part. We don't smell that at all.
Odeur 53 Notes
oxygen, flash of metal, fire energy, washing drying in the wind, mineral carbon, sand dunes, nail polish, cellulose, pure air of the high mountains, ultimate fusion, burnt rubber, flaming rock

I have been using 53 for several years and really like it, as does my wife. The sole complaint I have is about the packaging. They seem to no longer make a small bottle, and the packaging on the big bottle doesn't allow for pouring any out into a smaller atomizer. This means that for a 1-2 day trip, 53 stays at home. So in this age of travel liquid restrictions: please bring back the small bottle version (there used to be a ~15-30ml bottle which was perfect for travel). (Or change the current packaging so the atomizer can unscrew).

What a wonderful scent!! Soft skin musk, All of these notes combined are wonderful. Even though it's smells really nice, I agree with one of the posters before in that it doesn't seem long lasting. 5/4/11

I thought this would smell different and metallic, which is exactly what I was looking for. But it's just a non offensive, nondescript cologne that doesn't really smell like anything. I liked it... I didn't fall in love with it though.

This manages to smell like "clean," without smelling soapy. Outstanding.

After days of referring back to this and other samples, it hit me - Odeur 53 is quite similar to Donna Karan Black Cashmere. Strange but true. Both are very uplifting modern smelling scents that hint at being floral while hanging more towards atmospheric.

Its so SHEER it barely exists, but what I can sense it its parody of being a perfume, that is not. The lightness of this perfume is nice though, reminds me of a Gendarme scent.

I honestly tried this only because the description was so different. And the reviews were sooo varied. BUT I just tried it, and I'm in love. It smells clean, but not too sweet. Sweet, but not especially feminine. I expected it to be chemically, but it's not at all. Very nice!

I once dated a surfer, this hot guy from Hermosa Beach, and this is how he smelled when he showered and picked me up for a date after an afternoon surfing. Not perfumy, not fussy, just clean man skin with a memory of recent salt water and neoprene.

I have never smelled this, but I just wanted to say that this review: "This smells like my cat" made me lol and lol. I am literally snorting with laughter. not sure why. but whatever. haha.

I must say this is the weirdest fragrance I've ever tried to review and I've been reviewing scents since 2003. When I first put it on it was "somewhat" clean smelling and I'm a very big fan of soapy clean scents......(was this soapy clean with an artificial note, perhaps?) and then it morphed, it changed, and it went through a cornucopia of scents, emotions and issues as it dried down - all a moot point now.....The long-lasting drydown is the thing, however. It smells like a man. You know. Just man. Man. Not perfumey, not a dirty man, not a clean man but the true essence of a man's skin; that singular note that distinguishes male skin from female skin. If you know what I'm talking about, then, that's CdG Odeur 53 in a nutshell. And if you know what I'm talking about you full-well realize sometimes this is a wonderful scent and sometimes it's not a good scent at all...but this fragrance captures it in all of it's GENERIC capacity. Something you must experience to appreciate (or reject). Truly the most strange and unusual scent I've ever reviewed. I'm giving a middle of the road rating because it is completely impossible to give it a postive or a negative review. It's truly unique. I have to give it that!

i love this scent. It smells like fresh, clean skin. It has an undefinable notes in it. It smells like nothing! Whenever I wear it, people always give me compliments. It smells like the paper. My all-time favorite!

My boyfriend just bought this fragrance, and while I was a little sceptical after smelling it full-force in the store. But after he took it home and put it on, it suddenly became this amazing scent. Whoever posted the comment saying that it was 'artificial, yet organic' is dead on. It sort of blends with a person's natural smell, and evolves it into a sort of clean, but human, futuristic scent. I adore it.

I have been wearing Odeur 53 since it came in Nail Polish size for $20 at Moss in New York. It is my favorite and always will be.

I have just read that CDG stepped away from traditional ingredients in 1998. However, I have first smelt this Odeur 53 in London in 1991/1992. Just to say how progressive and enterprising CDG is!

This is an odd scent - very faint, very elusive. It almost smells floral, but doesn't. Almost smells chemically, but doesn't. If a flower smelled like nail polish, it would smell like this. It's not pungent, not sweet. Mood-wise, it reminds me of Aeon Flux (the TV show, not the movie). Futuristic, but somehow organic.

Odeur 53 smells like: 1. Latex gloves 2. Rubber elastics 3. a little bit like milk I didn't find it refreshing, just nasty. Try Comme des Garcons #3 instead.

smells like a rain mixed with hairspray and nail polish. actually it is indescribable. fresh. cyber-androgynous. light. flowery. abstract dew :) disappears after 10-30 minutes, however I tried a sample sometime last summer during very hot day and it was lasting for HOURS! So... it depends :)

This is the purest fragrance I've experienced in my life. Its unique but not as strange as I anticipated. Its strange in that it so simple yet utterly possessing. I think 53 etched out new places in my mind. Didn't last long on me though but still worth it.

Soft and light green scent w/hints of new plastic in the top notes that fade down to crisp feminine oxygen. Not quite like anything I've every smelled before. Brief scent experience, as it fades quickly, but leaves a barely detectable layer of clean. Not for someone who loves to smell "Perfumed". At first I thought it reminded me of Philosophy's "Pure Grace", but in comparing the two close up, 53 is more fleeting and unrecognizable - their mission accomplished.

A light, cool, fresh, artificial scent. I can't make out any notes, and I guess that's the point. It's a bit like a lighter, more mainstream version of the Synthetic series, a synthetic scent that's not offensive and smells like nothing in particular. I don't really like this kind of "cool and clean" scent, to be honest I'd rather smell "dirty". Too nondescript and fresh men's cologne-y for my taste.

Been wearing this now for 6 years and it still intrigues me how blending boring day to day smells can smell magnificent and when people commit how divine it smells on me, their faces are fantastic once one tells them what they are indeed smelling

a modern concept gives you the best unisex perfume you'll ever try.my boyfriend stole the sample so i'm going to order it again.it reminds us of the snow covered mountains of greece,a clean landscape of fresh air without the usual boring ozone elements that other clean fragrances have

I tell you, this scent is hard to describe. Also it is hard to describe why i like it, and i really do. It smells like nothing that you expect from a normal perfume. I think it reminds me of playing nintendo, because it smells a bit like a warm video game cartridge. My sister thought it smelled like a pheromone-perfume she had bought a few years ago. My girlfriend thinks it smells like fish scale and steel. In my humble opinion this is more of a men's fragrance than a womens but that's probably because i'd never expect that a woman would wear a perfume that smells like hot plastic and vulcanized rubber. Some things it smells like: Gas station Laundromat Clean taxi car

This scent smells incredible. Different from anything else I've ever smelled yet familiar and comforting to my nose when I smell it. Everyone compliments me when I wear it and most of all I can't stop smelling my wrist.

on me it smell like fresh laundry, it reminds me of my grandmother's house in florida after she used the dishwasher. I heard Rei Kawakubo wanted the parfume to fade away rapidly on men's skin because she didn't like the idea of men wearing perfume so you need to get close to smell it, which isn't necesserly a bad thing. Very artificial but at the same time fresh and light.

I think this was made for me. It's such a unique and fantastic scent. . . The descriptions of the notes are really just ideas that are evoked (sand dunes, oxygen), but this is somehow accurate. LOVE IT!

Test this on yourself, but it can be amazing. On some people the nail polish dominates, others the burnt rubber..others...well, you'll find out. On me (I'm a guy) it comes out chemical solvent-floral at first, and then dries down to rubber/earth. It is hard for people to notice (which is a good thing), but once they do, they beg you to wear it. There is nothing like it.

Very metallic/ synthetic and cold on me. I prefer warm/ sexy musks, maybe that's why it's hard for me to warm up to this strange, fascinating potion. Nothing like it out there, worth checking out.

This scent drives my dairy herd wild, but Flossi-May still produces the same amount of milk. So I will have to say no to this scent. Maybe a good scent for you city types, but here in Idaho, the last thing we need to smell like is burning tires.

Wore this for an entire year and loved it. My boyfriend picked it out for me and he loved it. Its an odd scent, really modern and unidentifiable. Sometimes reminded me of hairspray, sometimes the burnt rubber came thru, then something oddly green and floral. Got a lot of compliments on it. stopped wearing it after I broke up with the boyfriend. Oh well onto the next perfume and the next boyfriend...

This is very interesting. I don't get the burning tire thing? If anything I get kinda a wet earthy smell, like after the rain on a warm day, mixed with a woody vanilla scent? It kinda reminds me of one of the MAC Creation/MV2 scents that is out (it has the gold top) That is a great vanilla/bourbony scent for only $38 for 1.7 oz) I personnaly see some strange similarities between these two scents. This definately should not be sold under the mens fragrance area, but I guess guys may like it too? To each is own! ~ Enjoy!! ~

Definitely a scent for the intellectual-minded fans of Rei Kawakubo. Has a metallic hint of nail polish remover yet the smell is strangely grassy.

Though not my favorite of the Comme des Garcons line (that is No2), this is quite an unusual scent. It comprises many different layers, yeas there is some burning rubber, but that is only a small part of the mix. I like it, it's almost an anti-scent.
