Here's what other people are saying about 1740 Marquis de Sade...
This fragrance could be nice on someone else but on me its VERY spicy. It has this overwhelming Christmas spice to it on me & rather cheap smelling. I noticed a comment about the similarities with lelabo's Patchouli 24 & as a huge fan of that scent these two scents are completely different. Perhaps body chemistry changes that but on me there is no resemblance.

I was unimpressed with this fragrance. I am a person who appreciates a strong and spicy scent. I wanted to give this a try yet only received a honey and floral scent to it. I was expecting a bit more punch.

Gorgeous! Cannot rave enough about this scent. The opening is powerful and unique - I get a lot of patchouli here, maybe some of the spices as well. But but the drydown is to die for. As another reviewer pointed out, I do smell bourbon - maybe a smoky single-malt scotch (?). This must be the davana sensualis, which I understand can have a wine-like aroma. But to say 'wine-like' would be a misnomer, since here the davana seems to provide dark, rich, and boozy notes. I get a tiny bit of flower, patchouli clearly comes through and so does the scent of well-tanned leather. Boozy/gourmand fragrances are NOT my thing. But this is an exception. Once I sampled it, I cannot live without it. Just ordered my FB.

I’m ridiculously surprised that nobody has commented on the undeniable and much appropriate note of feces easily detectable in this juice! I have found Marquis DeSade to be the most memorable of HDPs offerings this past decade. Perhaps inappropriately it never failed to give me a chuckle, it’s called Marquis DeSade folks for goodness sake!

A louche masc, but so well done it’s hard not to be drawn in -- wet dirty leather and a dry-spice thick patchouli with funk and an intermittent hay-blood tang. If it had a voice, it would be Serge Gainsbourg; if it were a party I'd be either much too young or much too old to attend. (And “birch” is a verb here, not a note.) Impressive if slightly terrifying.

A modern classic. Expertly blended. 5 stars.

A disclaimer; I shy away from really feminine fragrances with white flowers and amber as they get really sweet and "big" on me. It goes on sharp and pretty dry. Over time it smells like bourbon with a hint of vanilla, leather(?) and amber. I wear it in cooler months and dab it lightly on multiple areas to keep the scent close to me, a sensual whisper rather than a drunken shout.

Heady, voluptuous, and almost impossibly sweet, 1740 strikes me as anything but an "everyday" fragrance. Starts out intense and never really backs off. Spicy, leathery, heavy -- this is not a summer scent. When the immortelle surfaces, pancake syrup becomes a recognizable note and that's a concrete indication of where this sits on the aromatic spectrum. I have no idea what this perfume has to do with the Marquis de Sade but the year 1740 makes a certain amount of sense: the fragrance is truly baroque.

Probably my favorite HdP, and in my top 25. I love the darkness and mystery the opening blast provides! This fragrance begins by shouting, but through the dry down, does soften This is a leathery patchouli on me, supported by birch, cardamom and coriander, and just enough creamy florals. I’m not very familiar with Immortelle, or the “everlasting flower,” but 1740 showcases it, and I’ve not come across anything like it! Excellent and big thumbs up!

Smells almost exactly the same as Le Labo Patchouli. Bergaomte gives a tiny bit of freshness, and Le Labo Patchouli is a bit more meaty. Otherwise they are the same. But I like it.

Marquis de Sade wished he might smell this good. You get all the elements of a good time that has been repeated often in this randy masculine romp of a scent. Leather, booze, incense, sharp saffron all add up to an odd sour musk that tells of debauchery of some sort. This is a great scent to add the patina of wildness without having live through the hangover.

This is a really long lasting, warm and spicy wood scent. I put it on this morning and 12 hours later, it's still with me, developing through the day. Its complexity and quality are right up there with fragrances in my collection that are 3x the price. Awesome!
