After tackling chypre last year with Sublime Balkiss, Céline Ellena, who succeeded her father Jean-Claude five years ago as the in-house perfumer of The Different Company, takes on the oriental family with a double twist, ditching the traditional vanilla and adding a novel material to the blend: calopilé, aka curry leaf. But fear not: in Ms Ellena’s own words, calopilé is “raspy and green, metallic and warm”. Bergamot adds a touch of shimmering freshness to the creamy amber and tonka bean accord while red rose – actually a blend of pepper, geranium and an undisclosed ingredient – oddly pulls the scent towards a slightly more masculine register, anchored by a sandalwood-type base. Oriental Lounge has the heft, lushness and languor of an oriental. And it is recognizably an oriental – but without the arabesques. As easy to slip on as a beloved cashmere sweater on bare skin, as sensuous as lounging on a heap of silk pillows. Though not necessarily by yourself. |
