Black Gardenia
Perfume Oil
by Michele Bergman

The Scoop
Like floating in and out of a dream. The blossom may be snow-blind white, but there is something deeply mysterious in the soul of gardenia and this silken oil blend captures it. Initially intense, Black Gardenia softens and becomes exquisitely fresh as it warms on your skin. The beguiling heady sweetness of the beloved flower is rendered with a haunting delicacy and touched with the barest whisper of dark intentions. Like the lilt of the sirens song or the fragile glow of a will o’ the wisp, this fragrance reminds us that something extremely beautiful can also be extremely dangerous. Mesmerizing.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this scent. It is the most feminine , sexy, and delicious of any of the gardenia perfumes. I've tried them all: Kai, Monyette, Sage Pearl and this outshines them all! Warning: highly addictive!

Well, hmmm. All the previous reviews describing candy necklaces, head shops, and even A bit of bug spray have validity. I smell no gardenias, only a strange potion that conjures memories of my naughty youth. This having been said, I rather like it.

I wanted to like it, I love the creamy gardenia of Monyette Paris, and was hoping this would be a dark, moodier version.. boy was I wrong, overtly floral...and it reminded me of when I was a child and I rode the Greyhound Bus - it smells like floral deodorizer covering up greyhound bus bathroom smell. Truly disappointed and glad I bought only a sample. Could be body chemistry, but it just didnt work on me!

I wanted to like this as the description sounds great but it was cheap and nasty. Smells like a 'head shop' where you'd buy tie-dye t-shirts and bongs. Like very bad cheap incense. From the very sweet top to the horrible dry down, this is just an awful smelling perfume!

Ive been searching for a fragrance for several months, and I have to say, this is absolutely in the Top 5. Perfume oils are truly intricate and complex within their own right, and of the available oils on the market thus far, one can tell this is very high quality. I've never appreciated obnoxious florals or candy-type scents, especially concerning the mid-notes (10 minutes) or dry-down (45 minutes), so thankfully, this scent is very " upper-class."

I think it's a pretty gardenia/candy scented perfume, but unfortunately a few minutes after putting it on, my 8 year old asked me if I had just sprayed Raid. Not what I was hoping for!

Black Gardenia is a totally gormand fragrance. What I do not get is that if you dislike this fragrance, why can't one be a bit classy in describing its undesirability. Thre are so many horridly composed negative comments, that I would totally consider getting it just because of them. This is a very classy web site and I would ask others to respect this even if one dislikes the fragrance.

I really like this, but there's nothing "dark" about it! It smells like bubble gum, bananas, gardenia & tuberose. It smells a lot like Monyette Paris without the heavy Nag Champa. On intial application it almost smells like a linear tuberose fragrance, but the bubble gum sweetness appears quickly followed by a mixture of gardenia & banana. It's a sweet white flower leaning towards tropical.

Absolutely terrible. Sticky, sugar gardenia. Fortunately, there are testers.

Parfum soliflore oů toutes les autres notes olfactives entourent l'odeur centrale du jasmin. Parfum tenace qui dure toute la journée. Étrangement, le résultat me laisse sans opinion, pas ravie, pas déçue.

Mostly black, only a little gardenia. Like Monyette, but smokier, stronger. Great if you're Goth. OK if you're anything else. NOT for the office. Strictly evening/hot date.

This scent is so dark and mysterious. At first whiff it starts off a little sweet on my skin (think candy necklace with black liquorice or spicy peppery bubblegum). But then, the gardenia intricately weaves it way in and dominates the scent along with a warm spice or amber. The name black gardenia is very fitting. It smells just as one would imagine a black gardenia to smell like. It is striking, intriguing, dark, and mysterious.

Adding my love for this perfume oil. Gothically dark and slightly decaying gardenia. Perfect impression of it. I love it.

Undeniably gardenia. This scent is warm straight out of the bottle and it just simply blends into your body chemistry. There isn't an extreme sweetness to it but more of a buttery amber that compliments the creaminess of the gardenia. Lasts for hours on me without being overpowering.

OOh, this is soooo sweet, and like a previous reviewer stated - it does end up smelling like overly-sweet bubblegum on my skin. I generally love gardenia - I adore Kai, Monyette, Sage's Moonstone, and various other gardenia-based scents, but this is just far too sweet and concentrated for my liking. I found it nauseating.

Black Gardenia is a strange scent. In my book strange is good. I couldn't figure out at first what was giving this gardenia it's "blackness" - you know that gothic/edgy/slightly animalic scent? Then Voila! It hit me that that note could be mousse de chene. It's that same note that I find very appealing in Safron James UME scent. If I was going to purchase UME or Black Gardenia, then my $$ will go to Black Gardenia because I love these notes together. Fabulous scent and Black Gardenia is the perfect name for this perfume.

I can't believe those who doesn't like Black Gardenia, it's one of the most beautiful scents ever. Next to Monyette Paris, this is the best gardenia based fragrance according to my opinion. Sweet but not too in-your-face, rich, sultry and feminine. I only have this as a sample and I have to save up for a long time before I can afford one precious bottle!

Was intrigued by the idea of gardenia with a "dark side", but this didn't have it on me. Starts off with a green, appley note, then a little lily of the valley, then a sweet, buttery gardenia. Pleasant but not long lasting. Cannot be compared to Fracas, which is LOUD on me & much more dark & dangerous!

I need to preface this by saying I only wore it for about 5 minutes before taking it off. It was too sweet and flowery for me, to the point of almost making me nauseous. Smells a little bit like a candy necklace. I wonder where the 'black' aspect comes in? Maybe it is on the drydown, but I don't see the point in waiting for a smell you eventually like if you can't stand the smell initially. I wanted to like this.. the bottle is gorgeous!

Good thing this was a free sample. I absolutely love gardenia, and having tried Kai among others (which I love. love, love by the way)was disappointed with this one. It's kind of old lady and sweet, too sweet. Too bad, I guess you either love or hate this one.

The tuberose leaped sexily off my skin, followed by magnolia and heady sweetness. What a gorgeous combo in thick perfume oil form! I'm sure the name 'gardenia' is meaningfully used here, but here's a heads-up for tuberose lovers - this one is a very lovely tuberose... Maybe the absolute was used?! I *heart* this madly.

This is the perfectly crafted scent of an actual gardenia blossom. I don't know what she did or how she did it, but Michelle Bergman did not simply distill perfume oil from gardenias - she put the whole flower in a bottle and somehow it is now in liquid form. I feel like there is a gardenia bush right here with me. Absolute spot-on gorgeous perfection....I will be buying a bottle of this after I save up for a bit, and I have a feeling it will not be the only bottle I'll need in my lifetime. I'm swooning! How can this be so perfect??!!

This scent took me away into a quiet fantasy. It is so intoxicating, I swore to myself the moment the oil touched my skin...I must have this. It is quite simply the most lovely gardenia scent I have worn...Guerlain's Gardenia would come second, if they still make it.

This is a perfectly lovely gardenia scent [with a hint of anise?], but no dark twists for me, and I really wanted that mysterious "extra something" to kick in and sweep me off my feet. I was hoping it would live up to its description and user reviews. Stevie Nicks never showed up, darn it! :(

Wow--smoky and clean at the same time. I got the sample and I have been dabbing it sparingly on pulse points so that it adds a steamy under-note to my P & L Tiptoeing Through the Chambers of the Moon. A great witchy combo, though I plan on splurging on the full bottle and wearing it full-strength for special occasions. If you're a little "dark-sided" like me, you'll love this.

Black Gardenia is a beautiful fragrance. Admittedly, the bottle is very small, but it lasts on me and is SO worth it! I agree with the poster below who said that it has a candy like quality, that is also incense-y. That describes it perfectly.

The fragrance of the real Gardenia flower is sublime. I always enjoy smelling various perfume versions. This particular scent remotely suggested a gardenia to me. It has a candy-like, almost incensey odor with little or no complexity. If you are looking for a sophisticated gardenia scent, this one is not it. I also found that, despite it being an perfume oil, the scent did not last very long on me. It's a hefty investment for such a small bottle. I would say try the sample first.

This starts out as a pretty true gardenia, with the right mix of green and sweet. Then it becomes super-sweet - but it's not the creamy sweetness of an actual gardenia, it's more the sugary, artificial sweetness of a piece of candy. Eventually, it mellows out a bit, but it's still a little too sweet for my taste. Three and a half stars.

I tried this on one wrist and Perfect Gardenia on the other. It was a great way to compare two very different takes on my favorite flower. Black Gardenia is instantly likeable. It melts into your skin, warm and luscious while Perfect Gardenia goes on fresh and green. Unfortunately, after wearing it for several hours the Black Gardenia becomes too candy sweet, overpowering the gardenia's delicacy. It’s a very interesting, rich, scent, just not my Gardenia ultimate, (which is, of course, Kai.)

Got my sample and this is a beautiful scent. It goes on sweet then mellows down to a creamy gardenia scent. Reminds me of my mother's gardenia bush back in Hawaii. Definately on my list of faves, along w/ kai perfume oil and child.

Lovely - the first gardenia fragrance that I really enjoy. It's doesn't warm down and turn stale on my skin and it's not too tart/green either (ie. Kai)...very sweet and creamy floral that has a bright fruit-like note which keeps it smelling fresh...rather strong on application (apply in small increments!), but the drydown is beautiful and clean and the lasting power is pretty good...several hours on my skin.
