Eau de Parfum

The Scoop

Enigmatic, elegant and enchanting, the iris is one of perfumery's most treasured ingredients- and also one of its most challenging. So when we heard that Naomi Goodsir's first-ever floral was to be named Iris Cendré (or "Iris Ash"), our hearts began to flutter with anticipation of an Iris fragrance that might transcend convention and offer a bold new portrait of this beloved material. And even beyond our wildest dreams, Goodsir and perfumer Julien Rasquinet have delivered a bona fide masterpiece- a lush, warm, buttery interpretation of iris with a gorgeously restrained hint of smokiness that feels both wonderfully creative, and quintessentially Naomi Goodsir.

Before even the first spray, Iris Cendré affirms its rarity with a striking green color that results from its uniquely high concentration of true iris concrete, a property that gives the fragrance its striking depth and nuance. While the opening presents a crisp, delicately fruity burst of bergamot and spiced tangerine, the rich heart of buttery iris soon takes over, displaying a gorgeously evocative facet of the flower with warmer, more sultry tones than we've ever before found in an iris scent. A light veil of violet reinforces the floral depth, while a sensually smoky accord of cistus, tobacco and amber evokes the distinctly complex drydown of another Naomi Goodsir classic, Bois D'Ascese. The overall effect is both subtle and striking, a wholly unisex floral that seems to contain multitudes without ever raising its voice, feeling vivid and deep but also masterfully restrained. With Iris Cendré, Naomi Goodsir and Julien Rasquinet have redefined what we thought an iris scent could be and in doing so, created a new reference.

A realistic, rooty iris perfume.(Carrots!) I do not smell any of the other notes that are smoke or tobacco. It kinda reminds me of Honere Les Carrots by Olivia G. I do like it!

As this is my favorite Naomi Goodsir, I want to give it five stars but won't. The attempt is there, but the execution falls short. Buttery Iris is always a pleasure. Whatever else is going on here is forgettable to me. Sorry.

At first it's carrots in an ashtray, but in a good way, then the iris comes out more, then tobacco. It's definitely a very realistic iris, dry and frank. Would be great on a man or a woman who can pull off a deep tobacco.

I really really wanted to love this scent, but unfortunately it does not go well with my skin chemistry. Opening, I got no citrus notes at all, only an overwhelming odor of burnt tobacco. I smelled like an ashtray for the first 20 minutes until the floral notes kicked in. Then the perfume was lovely, light and smokey at the same time. But the sillage was weak, lasting less than an hour. Such a disappointment.

I suppose bergamot and tangerine happened, but then the orris butter and tobacco kicked in and frankly I began an entirely new life, one with a discreet amber frame around an iris shape I've never even imagined before. This is fragrance as abstraction, and so perfect I almost wish i could subtract stars from some of my other reviews to make this 5 really, really count.

As close to a signature scent as I have ever smelled. Perfect from start to finish, and on a man, the next morning there are pheromonal type things going on! Perfect.

As perfect a smoky iris as I can imagine. The citrus is only present to me as adding a certain lightness, together with the violet, that works beautiful with the rich orris and the smoky cistus and tobacco. Really beautiful.

This is my favorite fragrance of all time. If you are a fan of any other Naomi Goodsir scents, you will love this. It's delicate and refined. It almost has that lipstick smell, and the tobacco is subtle but a gorgeous touch. You could break a lot of hearts wearing this one.
