Chypre is referring to a particular style of perfume that was popular in the mid-century up through the 1980s. They're all based on a particular scent profile made up of bergamot up at the top, cystus labdanum in the middle, and either oak moss and or patchouli in the base. When these things are combined, it creates a very distinctive scent profile, and that's what Chypre's are based on.
So on this shelf, I do have a few favorites. We've got Chypre-Siam from Rogue. This is a perfume brand that's particularly inspired by vintage perfumes, and this masters the Chypre style. In fact, it's reminiscent of one of the most famous Chypre perfumes called Mitsuko from Guerlain. But in this case, that peach note is replaced by lime. It's really special.
Fumabat is a perfume by a very mysterious small brand called Couteau de Poche, or pocket knife. To me, this is a very authentic 80s Chypre, and it has a little bit of a smokiness in the base. Incredibly elegant.
Chypre perfumes come across as very structured, very big, opulent, and opaque. This is a perfect example, Salome from Papillon. There are so many layers to this fragrance, and this one in particular seems to be using a lot of natural, essential oils. I get a very particular vibe from this perfume.
