Venenum by L’Artisan Parfumeur opens with a dry chai note that dominates the composition from the start, spiced and aromatic, but lacking warmth or sweetness. Despite the promise of a creamy rice accord, I don’t get any rice at all, just an austere blend of spices and something green that cuts through sharply. The result is more herbal and dry than comforting, more scratchy than soft. It leans far from the cozy gourmand I expected, and the overall effect feels distant and oddly detached. It’s not for me, definitely not.

I've become convinced that minimal ingredient lists work best on me. This is delightful. Soft, creamy, warm and a little spiced. Smells exactly like the listed notes which is rare these days. Definitely clings close to the skin and has better longevity on fabrics. Very much FB and signature scent worthy in my opinion.

Delicious rice-milk and sandalwood warmth, with the masala twirling through adding intermittent notes of everything from saffron and cardamom to cedar and, inexplicably but happily, a twinkly orange. This is a cup of chai on a brisk day, enjoyed from a warm seat on a heated veranda, with an unobstructed view of the tree-lined valley below. Unusual and beautiful.

Sunny, Sunday afternoon in autumn with a hot chai tea. I love this fragrance the longer I wear it. The drydown is smoothly spicy, a little sweet and aromatic. I truly am saving the rest of my sample for Thanksgiving dinner with family and am wishing for a full bottle for future autumn days.
