What is Musk?

Transcript

Let's talk about musk, and there is a little bit of a misconception about what musk in perfume actually is. The original musk came from a specific kind of deer. Most brands and products nowadays do not use that. It's a synthetic version of that.

A lot of people tend to think that musk is sort of heavy, maybe dense, dark. And in reality, most musk is actually what we refer to as like a white musk, and it smells actually pretty clean. Most of the ones that we have on our shelves, for instance, are these like sparkling, fresh, sort of hard to put your finger on a note.

So an example, for instance, Un Musc by Obvious, they put a little bit of ginger and bergamot in here, so it has this kind of touch of sparkling citrus with this just sort of quiet, clean feeling. Fleur de Peau is a really beautiful, out-of-hittick iris scent with a little bit of pink pepper. Nasomatto even makes this wonderful silver musk. He doesn't list his notes, but basically it's also kind of, it's slightly maybe woodier.

I love using musk as a base layer, and I also love layering my musks together, so I love doing the oils, little essential fades here, kind of have like an aura of musk around you. Musk is a component used in lots of perfumes, and even if they don't list it or don't really highlight it, it's often there, and it just makes the notes kind of come together in this beautiful way.
