Hi. Today I wanted to talk about one of my favorite Soliflores. A Soliflores is a perfume that focuses on one particular flower. It doesn't mean that it's made up of only that one flower. In fact, because in nature, real flowers have so much complexity and nuance in their smells, a perfumer is going to need to use many different layers and shades in order to convey that complexity.
So, my favorite Lily of the Valley Soliflores is by Comme des Garcons. It's called Lily. This was released in 2000 as part of the brand's Leaves series. This is very fitting because Lily of the Valley, which is also known as Muguet in French, is a very green smell. To me it smells cold like morning dew in a garden or life just emerging in the beginning of spring after a cold winter. Just think of green leaves just shooting out of the cold soil in the beginning of spring. It's just a refreshing, beautiful smell.
Now, Muguet Soliflores have been around since forever. In fact, there's a whole tradition in history about those kinds of perfumes. But unlike the more classical, iconic examples, the Comme des Garcons Lily Soliflores is different. And it's because it doesn't smell like a floral perfume per se. It actually smells like a flower. It's kind of an uncanny photorealistic representation of nature, which is why it's one of my favorite perfumes in the store.
Now, Comme des Garcons did discontinue this fragrance a few years ago, but luckily for us, it's back, this time in a white bottle. There you have it. One of my favorite Soliflores, Lily, by Comme des Garcons. Thank you.
