Today I'm smelling Korrigan from Lubin. Now this fragrance has really emerged at Scentbar and on Luckyscent.com as a bona fide cult classic. Now what I mean by cult classic are those fragrances that are the best examples of their style or they do something unlike any other fragrance. In the case of Korrigan it does both of those things. It's so distinct and so unlike anything else and yet it's so resolved and fully formed and deliberate. You get the sense that Korrigan can only be Korrigan.
Now the perfumer Thomas Fontaine had in mind the idea of caramel wood but if you're thinking you're just going to get wood notes with sweet sugar notes it's not that kind of fragrance at all. What it does is contrast these creamy milky notes and contrast them with a tarry, smoky leather. This might sound kind of unusual and weird and maybe it is but it somehow works. You can view Korrigan as a gourmand because of the caramel and the cream and the cognac notes but the wood, the tarry leather and those bitter green herbs keep Korrigan from ever becoming too sweet and certainly never predictable.
On some people the dry down goes into just a mellow, creamy, sweet sandalwood with hints of smoke. On other people that contrast between the milky cream and the tarry leather stays very vivid and it's so unusual maybe even a little avant-garde. It kind of depends on your personal chemistry. Korrigan is certainly unisex but because it is so distinct it's not for everyone. It's really dependent on your personal taste. Highly recommended, Korrigan from Loubain.
