In 1555, the Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner went caving in the Alps and discovered Moonmilk - the creamy pearlescent substance that leaks from limestone and dolomite. Moved by its beauty, he wrote, “At night, the moon shines into the cave so brightly the light itself seems to take form like a mist. It gathers in the ceiling and makes the limestone stalactites glitter and gleam, dripping tears of white liquid into puddles on the rock floor.”

Inspired by Gessner’s ode to liquefied minerals, Stora Skuggan created Moonmilk – a muguet scent that opens with lime and black tea. At first sniff, it’s a bright and fresh floral; classic and tart and surprisingly green. But with wear it settles into an easy, milky concoction - a lactonic sandalwood that sparks visions of molten crystals pooling in swiss caves. It’s a sunny scent with a nighttime shadow. Unexpected, heady, and deeply intriguing.

Moonmilk makes my mouth water like after the first sip of limeade. It opens juicy and bright with a heavy dose of citrus, cardamom, and black pepper. After a while the tartness mellows out and a spicy black tea and lactonic sandalwood become the focal point. At the drydown I notice the clean, green lily of the valley and the leather. On me, the leather note wears more like a soft suede, sheathing the sharper edges. This feels like a middle of summer fragrance and I can’t wait to see how it wears in the July heat. I smell this on my skin all day and it lives on my clothes until I wash them.

A good old sandalwood + cardamom combo, though Moonmilk is somewhat different in that it has a more aromatic, masculine slant. I still think this is unisex leaning feminine, but there is something a little deeper and darker and almost soil-like about this. When I first smelled it, I thought it had an aquatic note somewhere in there maybe that's the lime, though I don't really smell it as itself or as citrus at all. Don't get put off by "soil", "aquatic", or "citrus", these are really just me trying to describe the je ne sais quoi quality that this fragrance has that makes it intriguing and alluring beyond the call of simply well-done cold-weather warm spice scents. Somewhat electric. 9.5/10.

Incredibly unique. It opens very lemon-y and citrus-y, but in a green way, not a sweet orange citrus way. It feels fresh and airy at first, then it progresses into a more woody scent, and settles into a clean sandalwood that is creamy and cozy, so so comforting. I'm obsessed. I blind bought it based on the notes and I'm glad I did. It lasts a long time, I barely did 2-3 sprays and could smell it on me for over 5 hours, which rarely happens to me with fragrances, since I usually can't smell anything on me after the first hour.
