Scent Bar Staff Video Review for Epona

Video Transcript

So, I've been spending as much time as I can with the newest release from the House of Papillon, Epona, which Liz Moore has released as a tribute to her horse. You can kind of feel, like with all her other stuff, this kind of aliveness to the fragrance that permeates through all the notes that are listed here.

It opens up in a really interesting way with, at a distance, it smells green and soapy, but when you get up close to it, you kind of get a smokiness, like in Bois de Sez or fragrances like that. And then, as it dries down, it changes so much and becomes this beautiful dry hay with a little bit of an animalic, a horsey musk.

But to me, it's my favorite horsey fragrance, if that's even a genre, because it kind of takes this more nostalgic and abstract and impressionistic approach to that kind of DNA, like a Chanel Cuir de Russie, but a little bit more alive.

This was a blind buy... and I'm GIDDY IN LOVE! Before taking the full bottle leap before sampling, I wondered: What does "warm horse skin" smell like? And from Lucky's video review: What exactly is a "horsey" fragrance? Well, this "horse accord" is reminiscent of the sweetest hay and honey and meadow vegetation... and sunshine and positive energy and the JOY of unconditional love from animals. Epona has the same effect on my mood as burying my face in my cat's belly. I thank perfumer Pierce for so beautifully translating feelings for her beloved horse to a the best fragrance I've enjoyed in a very long time. Ten out of five stars!

This is one of the quiet, introspective Papillons, like Dryad and Angelique, and the most intriguing one yet. I was first hit with a blast of cade oil, a scent that churns my stomach and swore me off some of the Bogue fragrances. Thankfully, it doesn't last long before violets and ionones sweep through. Then a distinct soapiness. Then a warm, comforting animalic smell surfaces. I get the sweet pungent whisper of horse fur, but this is a manicured dressage horse who bathes regularly. It is at once civilized and casual, like a country estate with an idyllic English garden where flowers are allowed to ramble a bit.
