Noir Marine Eau de Toilette by Phaedon

With a name like Noir Marine, you might expect oceanic notes or perhaps some odd synaesthetic translation of navy blue veering on black. And with a list of notes combining mint and tobacco, you’d be forgiven for thinking of menthol cigarettes…
But no: if Noir Marine does come as a shock, it is because of the surprising contrast between the cool blast of peppermint in the top notes and the warm, resinous base. Tobacco leaves act as a bridge between the two, splicing the tobacco facets of the peppermint with the sweet balsamic notes of the resins. This mint and tobacco accord might also be a reference to Egyptian cigarettes, so wildly in vogue in the 1900s, which might have been enjoyed with the still-ubiquitous mint tea… An arrestingly original blend, for a virtual trip to the Old Cataract Hotel in Assouan in the days of Agatha Christie.
