Cruel Intentions
Eau de Parfum - L’Oeuvre Noire Collection
by By Kilian

The Scoop
This unisex fragrance finds its home around the balsamic notes of oud, a legendary wood whispered to be worth more than its weight in gold. Cruel Intentions and Liaisons Dangereuses were meant to bring forth the concept of pleasures of the flesh…a Parisian orgy of the senses...a mix of earthly desires and defiance of prohibitions and conventions (so you know these aren’t simpering, fresh little forget-me-nots). The orange-lemony scents of bergamot from southern Italy are in its opening, which quickly dissipates into a woody heart. Dry papyrus and Haitian vetiver bring earthy mystery and elegance while the entire scent dances around the base notes of warm and golden styrax and castoreum. Like a demanding lover, its cruelty lies in the fact in brings you in and wraps you in a warm, earthy embrace, insisting you shove all others to the side…and you do so willingly.

For the last several years, I haven't worn any fragrances. I use scented shower gels (chai tea, etc) but that's it. My girlfriend and I both hate the typical scents you smell everywhere -- that staunch, lingering, "cheap" smell that, well, smells like cheap cologne (and always is). Being a lover of dark, warm, spicy smells, I decided to embark on a scent sampling journey, hoping to find something unique and see how high end scents treated my nostrils. I learned that everything smells vastly different on my skin that it does on a card or clothing, so one by one I put them on in the morning and let them unfold through the day. Of the many samples that I purchased and tried, this one came out on top. It wasn't what I was looking for, but was a nice surprise. Science tells us our sense of smell evokes the strongest memory response, and this has had the effect of giving me mental images that are seemingly not my own. There are some undertones in here that tickle my brain in the strangest way. On me it opens sharp, like a blue gin flavored with vetiver, but almost immediately afterward there is a sweet, billowy scent; the color and sensation of luxurious purple satins; something regal, like incense in a castle at midnight. As the sharpness dries away, the sweetness remains but lands finally on a deep powdery scent. It's definitely not an everyday scent. I wear it when I dress nice or go out and night and it somehow completes the outfit. It is very moody, somewhat strong, and for me, visual. I wore the sample for a week and decided to actually purchase a bottle, which will no doubt last me a very long time. The presentation is fantastic.

A very powerful scent. The initial effect was a heady mix of floral notes, but the drydown was pure wood mixed with dark musk. I initially loved this, but had comments that it was too strong and not the friendliest scent. It lasts all day with decent sillage.

I rated it as such because this fragrance is not my taste. It is interesting though....all of the woody notes are prominent at first, then the musk, then slight hint of floral...5/4/11

This is a yummy rich and complicated, woodsy, liquid sex...not for the everyday...lierally had a man stalk me in New York bar until I told him the name of the scent...sultry

This opened smokey on me and then meandered through bits of spice and dried down into a warm, sweet oud. Actually on me it didn't read masculine at all. My husband loved it, kept nuzzling my neck. Nice sillage and it lasted several hours which surprised me since other Kilian samples I've worn didn't last at all. I'm not getting Shalimar or M7 from this either. I also don't see it being a unisex fragrance as it is rather sweet.

Not a terribly interesting opening – it seem to go all over the place; a mix of several different types of male fragrances. After a while it focuses on one thing: smooth, creamy oudh. And yes, at first impression it is a dead ringer for Yves Saint Laurent's M7. It is more velvety and mellow in it's presentation though.

I cannot see why some people say this is the masculine version of shalimar. To me, it hasn't anything in common whit shalimar. I can't detect something on cruel intentions that reminds me off M7 and Nu edp. Loved the incense and spices of this perfume, mixed with the superb aoud. Excellent longevity, it stays for more than 12 hous on my skin.

This was a disappointment. Based on the array of notes, this should have been something spectacular! But...regrettably, it was a fairly demure and sweet-to-the-point-o-a-sugar-induced-coma scent. It is essentially Shalimar at 4 times the cost. Neither one presents a creative expression in the art of perfumery. Stereotypically feminine scent, albeit not a floral one.

Cruel Intentions by Kilian fails to live up to the movie after which it's named. Although I'm disappointed with it overall, the scent itself isn't unpleasant. The longer I wear it, the more it reminds me of a subtler, slightly more masculine version of Shalamar, which is undoubtedly due to the bergamot. I feel that it's definitely not worth the price though.

I ended up ordering a bottle of this and the presentation is utterly gorgeous!! The picture of the laquer box doesn't do it justice. I can now see the initial high price and the more affordable refills. If you're looking for something stunning for a special occasion...you won't be disappointed!!

I don't care for the dry, almost metallic opening, but now, four hours later, it is pure bliss - warm, woodsy, sweet and creamy. I can't stop enhaling. On the wish list it goes...

Cruel Intentions is tied with Straight to Heaven as my favorites in this line. This is a much softer and smoother oud than Montale...more in the realm of Arabian Ouds. The violet and rose intermingle so well with the creamy and warm woods. I think I prefer this to Montale White Aoud as the oud isn't as overpowering and I can enjoy the other notes.

The warm creamy woods in this scent are comforting and seductive. One perfume reviewer compared this to a "demure Montale oud" and that is a perfect description. I kept wanting to close my eyes and smell my wrists. A very nice unisex scent.

I love this entire concept. I can't wait to go to Scent Bar and see all the fountains.
