In The Library
Water Perfume
by CB I Hate Perfume

The Scoop
This scent is for those who can’t walk past a second-hand bookstore without coming away with at least one additional volume…that special smell of an old book you find buried in book store and you open it and breathe in…wonderful! In The Library is a subtle scent, and it’s not so much the exact recreation of the musty, antique smell of the pages of old book as much as it is the entire book…a hint of worn leather bindings, a whisper of the frayed cloth and the wisp of wood polish from the shelves it sits on and even a bit of sweetness we can’t place. In The Library is comforting and warm with soft, worn edges and no single obvious note…it never screams musty old parchment or crisp new leather, it’s more like a faint memory rolling around in your mind and inspiring you to dream of a long afternoon in an old leather chair curled up with a novel. Its inspiration was an old, signed first-edition book that Christopher found one lucky afternoon in London.
In The Library Notes
English Novel, Russian and Moroccan leather bindings, worn cloth and a hint of wood polish.
  $75 100ml

This is a real delight and is almost impossible describe. I think this one of those fragrances that will really vary according to your individual body chemistry. On me, the initial scent was hard to place but evaporated down to the most wonderful caramel musk that lasted all day. I will definitely be investing in a bottle of this perfume.

Since I love reading and always dreamed of having a library room in my house, I was intrigued by this. And now after sampling it, I can agree that this is how a library would smell like: kind of musty, lots of leather and somehow sweet. But as a perfume I'm not particularly impressed. It's definitely a comforting, skin scent which has no sillage at all. Lasting power is ok but not great either (4 hours max). Nice but not FB worthy for me.

I was so hoping this would be the perfect perfume for me but sadly it has a teeny-weeny woody-vanilla topnote (not unlike an old orange and white Penguin) and nothing else. The drydown was barely perceptible and I had to spray it on a tissue to show my friends, because they couldn't smell it on me after 5 minutes. It smelt mostly of tissue.

First 10 minutes books all the way and then dries to a coconut/vanilla which is a bit off putting.

I gave this a 4 stars because it is a beautiful fragrance for everyone, man or woman and has a 'different' sort of appeal. It is not like others, and therefore will make you stand out a bit, only due to the 'unaverage' type. I do have to agree with others when they say that these perfumes do not last. That is a shame for such a 'healthy' price tag. I do wish they had staying power.

Everything I expected and more. For me, it does maintain a strong scent of aged paper and leather with strong hints of vanilla. I've received many a compliment on this scent with laughs when I tell people what it's called.

Out of the bottle there are leathery, furniture polish top notes, but I agree with a previous comment that it fades into more of a coconut, vanilla scent after a short time. Too bad because the first hit had more complexity. Still, it never gets too sweet, and holds its masculine feel. My wife says it has a nice warmth. A double, but not a homer.

Am wondering why mitsouko tried a perfume from a brand she doesn't trust and with a name that promises to smell like books when she doesn't want to smell like books...

mitsuoko, you really ought to do a little bit of research about CB and his philosophy/products before shooting off your mouth about his brand name. always good to be informed before complaining in a public forum!

CB I hate Perfume has a fabulous website. I go there sometimes for inspiration when I am bored with writing. I visited his shop in Brooklyn last winter (worthwhile!) and purchased In the Library as a room spray. I do indeed have a library and I spray it occasionally for ambiance. It's terrific. An unusual environmental fragrance. Better in a room than on a body.

The name is so off-putting. How can I trust a perfume manufacturer who confesses he hates perfume? And although I'm a book worm, I don't want to smell like a book. Sorry. This just sounds like "he tries too hard" to be unique.

This is a very warm and yes, a very masculine scent (but can easily be layered with another floral or sweet scent to add a bit of femininity). The best part about CB I Hate Perfume it smells the same out of the bottle and on to your skin as it will hours later, no suprises or shocks later on. I love the fact that is lasts a long time (so far about 7 hours) without loosing impact. I've tired layering it with CdG Avignon or Heeley Cardinal, also works well with CdG Rose and Carnation.

Definitely a boy scent and really does smell like a library. Not a public library, but your grandfather's library that has just been cleaned.
