Datura Noir
Eau de Parfum
by Serge Lutens

The Scoop
Seductive and mesmerizing, this takes the familiar theme of white flowers, coconut and vanilla and puts a dark and mysterious spin on it. It is still an enchanted tropical isle, but it is midnight and we’re not sure exactly what is waiting for us in the deep blue shadows. A wickedly insistent blend of datura, osmanthus, heliotrope and tuberose beckons us to go ever deeper into the dark heart of the jungle. Voluptuous tonka and vanilla lull us into a dreamy haze, while unexpected touches of bitter almond and myrrh keep us wary and on the lookout for danger. Datura Noir does not reveal itself as a straightforward journey, but as a series of flickering impressions: one moment purely floral, the next apricot sweet, and the next richly gourmand. Somehow they all fit together beautifully, like the elements of like a particularly wild and vivid dream. We know that the treacherous datura is a hallucinogenic, but this reminds us of a different altered state – that of being madly, wildly, obsessively in love. Like the song you can’t get out of your head, or the face you cannot stop picturing – this is a fragrance you cannot forget.

I do not get anything sweet from this, only a very floral arrangement. Not a funeral home floral arrangement either. I picture this on an older woman. WAIT...I am an older woman. Try it before buying it. It's okay. I like foody with layers, but nothing like that here.

Datura Noir has the spirit of an old Guerlain, its melancholy dreaminess and particular blend of notes hold a special place in my collection and in my heart as well. A very femme powerhouse.

My favourite Serge Lutens scent, and the only one that seems to suit me! After an initial sweet note from the vanilla, the osmanthus, datura and rose notes really shine, hitting the right balance of sultriness and elegance. Sillage is good but not overpowering, and the overall effect and is a lovely complex scent that can't quite be defined.

At first haunting, beautiful, a little narcotic and spooky. Sounded right up my alley, but then the drydown reminded me of a cheap detergent or body wash you can find at duane reade. To be fair, I sprayed directly on my hand, and if misted lightly it would probably carry the haunting spooky note much better.

Very good scent, but not special for me.Douce Amere is far more interesting. For me.

I am starting to wonder if Luckyscent labeled my sample vials wrong. There is no tropical at all for me with this one. It is an exact copy of Dior's Hypnotic Poison. If I wanted to wear that one again, I would buy it since it's cheaper. Most of the samples I have tried so far have been reformulations of commercial perfumes (good ones, albeit). I am looking for something unique, which is what you would expect for a niche fragrance.

This actually reminds me a bit of Malle's Carnal Flower...must be the tuberose & coconut. In fact, I like this even more than CF but my chemistry ruins it- turns sour on me. So sad.

On first spray I thought I smelled lilac (which is weird because the note isn't listed in the frag), but the fragrance really quickly turned very sweet with a background of spice mixed in. I can see how it has "tropic" billing and imagine this might be what it smells like to drink a sweet mixed drink in resort hotels in the caribbean. Did not pick up on the myrrh at all (which was great as myrrh doesn't blend well with my chemistry). Not fbw for me, but others might crave this sweet scent.

I love this perfume and want to try every perfume that Christopher Sheldrake ever made! The cherry(almond?) and coconut smell along with whatever else is in there is my cup of tea. It's better than Monyette Paris although it has similarities. It makes me feel beautiful. That's the sign of a perfume that is for you- if it makes you feel beautiful.

Better lasting power than A La Nuit, which it sort of resembles. I barely detect coconut or any of the usual "tropical" smells -- which is good, because that stuff usually smells cheap/gross. Instead it's a strong, even hypnotic, not-really-jasmine, not-really-tuberose, sweet "golden" smell, with something dark here and there. 4 star at first, but the more I wear it the more I enjoy it, so, 5.
