Patchouli Leaves
Eau de Parfum
by Montale

The Scoop
There is nothing more comforting and luxurious than a warm, soft patchouli fragrance. We are mad about the note and fancy ourselves as patchouli connoisseurs, so do believe us when we say that Montale’s rendition is perhaps the most wonderful patchouli scent we know. Labdanum and woods give patchouli complexity and glorious dark depth, and vanilla provides a mesmerizing contrast to the earthy sharpness of the star note and makes the fragrance enveloping and warm. These are patchouli leaves wrapped in the softest and the most expensive of cashmeres, brought in oak trunks from exotic faraway lands…a dreamy and sensual perfume, as striking as it is easy to wear.

This is a very "soft" patchouli scent, if you could ever apply that term to the heady scent. The vanilla, amber, and musk work very well together to round out the patchouli, rather than overpower it. The edges, instead of being sharp and up-your-nose, are soft and supple. The drydown that I love in patchouli (which you get after hours and hours of heady spice), which is the DIRT, is present here after only five minutes on the skin. Don't get me wrong, I love a good 'ol fashioned patchouli (Mazzolari, for example, is superb), but it's also good to have a rounded out perfume to stick on when you know you're going to be in a crowded area, or with someone who doesn't appreciate the gorgeous scent.

This is one powerful scent! It's grown stronger on me as the afternoon has worn on. I had a bottle of Jalaine Patchouli that I used every drop of, and this scent from Montaie is very, very close to that. Both scents are very gourmand, using a creamy vanilla and rich amber to balance the deep woodiness of patchouli. The great thing about Montale, though, is that it has staying power, where as the Jalaine came on very strong, but disappeared on me within an hour. Even if I layered the Jalaine on several times a day, it never stayed! And the Jalaine is an oil, which usually has a longer stay on the skin. For me, this Montaie is very creamy, smooth and warm. Lots of vanilla, lots of amber and the patchouli is not rough or harsh at all.

I am a patchouli fan and expected to love this based upon the glowing reviews. But alas, the amber in this scent killed the deal for me. It utterly overwhelms everything else, including the patchouli and it's a sweet, powdery old ladyish scent on me. The moral of this review is that patchouli lovers who hate amber should beware of this one.

Ok. I read the notes too , but here goes: This smelled like chocolate off the top to my nose. Then I quickly smelled the green and dirt, which I liked a lot, being a big fan of dirt. Then I smelled mint and vanilla. And at the dry down...it made me think of chocolate chip mint ice cream. I like it, but I wish the dirt lingered more on me, and I smelled less like mint.

I am nuts about Patchouli, and this is the best rendition I have ever inhaled in a perfume. It has sophistication and depth. I pick up tobacco, amber, and patchouli. It lasts on your skin all day. wonderful stuff- perfect for fall and winter.

this patchouli is the best..not the sharp smell of other scents..tempered beautifully by the vanilla and amber..and, as most Montales, excellent longevity..love it.

I have lost count of the patchouli fragrances I have tried and been disapointed with. Now I have found the BEST of the best. Patchouli Leaves smells like the real thing and the staying power and sillage are unmatched. If you love patchouli as I do this is the one.

This is the best Patchouli I've experienced. Not the health food store oil patch but nearly the exact match for the patchouli plant I have when I rub the leaves to get that fabulous dreamy scent. When you slip into this fragrance don't think VW bus think sleek new Audi. It's that rich.

This beautiful, creamy scent gets wickedly sexy as it unfolds. Yet, it is undeniably classy. Yummy on the girls and the boys, and everyone in between.

Love It! I am sitting here smelling fabulous. First I got the woody scent, which is perfect for me, being that I am a Capricorn. Then I got the vanilla with the Amber right behind it. Love it!

This is one smooth patchouli scent which has excellent staying power. The amber in this scent is powdery dry and not sweetly cloying, creating an overall effect that is relaxed: sensual rather than overtly sexy. A beautiful scent.

I usually detest patchouli of any type in anything, but. . . .the cheap patchouli drenched anarchist hippie has a sophisticated aunt and she wears Patchouli Leaves as she reclines languidly on a brocade chaise in silk pyjamas, an ebony hooka poised between her scarlet lips. Creamy, dreamy soft mystery on a backdrop of impeccable patchouli. I am layering right now over Oriental Flowers and am in heaven!

Oh Thank You Montale! I have tried quite a few samples of patchouli based perfumes and thought I would never smell anything that resembled the real thing. Mazzolari, Les Nereides, Frapin, CB I Hate Perfume (pepper plus!), none of them can hold a candle to this, on me they are either too ambery or vanillic and poor patchouli is left out in the cold. Trust Montale to do it right! Seemless dark vanilla and earthy patchouli wafting around each other in a hypnotic dance. This is dark, warm and very very sexy

This is beautiful. It is the patchouli I have been searching for. All the others I have tried (Jalaine, Mazzolari) were too sweet from the addition of either vanilla or amber, but this is perfect! Here the vanilla and amber balance the patchouli as opposed to being there in addition to it - they round out the rough edges and leave a beautiful, smooth potion. I don't know what the person who smelled red hots is talking about - I smell no cinnamon whatsoever; and the lasting power is great on me. If you are looking for a feminine, yet not sweet patchouli, give this a try.

Funny...did not smell it very long? Are you kidding, you must not have tried Montale......Montale fragrances are known for their potency, sillage and longevity. I am not a patchouli lover, but if i had to wear a patchouli fragrance, it would be this one, i tried a sample and loved the sweet softness in the end. Eventhough this is a dark earthy smelling fragrance, the vanille softens it .

To the reviewer below: I don't think your sample is Montale - Patchouli Leaves. It is one thing to say you didn't care for it, that is cool, but that it didn't last long? Are your serious? This stuff has monster longevity and sillage!

More resinous than Mazzolari Patchouly and less amber and vanilla in the drydown. The only predominant Patchouli frag that I can wear on a regular basis. Great longevity and big sillage. Just a beautiful experience to wear this one.

Consider this a gold-standard patchouli. The blend of dry grassy patch and warm, almost chewy amber and vanilla make for a gorgeously well-balanced fragrance. Faintly sweet and resiny with a drydown that just keeps getting better. Great sillage and long lasting too.
