The Scoop
The are musks that are clean and white and musks that are dark and animalic. With Musk to Musk, Montale choses an entirely different direction and presents us with the musk that is spicy and resinous. The warmly aromatic nutmeg and the dry, leathery oud bring an exotic quality to the composition; the rich balsamic woods and the amber embellish the silky musk note like exquisite eastern ornaments. Austere and soft, dense and transparent, Musk to Musk smells wonderfully unique, like no other musk perfume we have ever encountered.

A clean, slightly gourmand musk. Low sillage and reasonable longevity (a few hours).

I am very much surprised by the negative opinions of this scent. While it definitely reminds me of some popular perfume I have smelled before, it is so much more refined and less harsh than the commercial one (don't know the name of whichever it reminds me of). And this smells deep and oh so sexy to me. I just bought a bottle of Musk by Mazzolari, and how I wish I would have bought this instead! I might just have to order this anyway. (female)

This is incredibly light for a Montale. In fact the most prominent note I get is that of fresh sea air with a slightly sweet undertone that isn't even discernable as musk. Not unpleasant, might be perfect for someone who has to work in a "scent phobe" environment. They seem to be everywhere these days. I wonder what those people do when they are out walking and a belching bus goes by. . . sigh, I'll never give in!!

Steam rising off the desert sands! The freshness of the white and grey musks is enhanced by the resinous woods for a "catch your breath" burst in the moment. The musk rises above a swirl of medicinal aoud leaving behind the flowers and spices of the other aouds and goes straight for the essence and the mystery. A minimal focus on very light musk + aoud + teak wood. Very fresh - this is Montale's version of Gendarme freshly pressed linen scent but with a little extra - I like it.

I was expecting to think this was . . . fine. I was absolutely not prepared to be blown away by it -- and, really, I suppose I'm not -- but I really, really like it. It's not particularly complex in terms of evolution. It goes on more musky (a clear, soft musk, definitely not animalic) and then the spicey woods emerge and knock the musk down a peg. And that's pretty much it. It's a very comfortable, surprisingly masculine scent (though still, I think, definitely unisex). Nice and clean, with enough spice to make it interesting. It's preceisely the kind of smell which would render me incapable -- or undesirous) of removing my nose from a lovely boy's neck.

If you relish the scent of diluted Windex with a wiff of, for lack of a better description, water, this will do well for you. I never got anywhere with it and paid dearly for the "experience". A major disappointment.

This musk was a disappointment. It never developed in to anything noteworthy. Had all the omph of slightly warm, soapy water with a weird chemical note . Perhaps it is just my body chemistry playing havoc but it hasn't happened with other musk based scents. Sorry Montale, but you lost me on this one.
