Molecule 02
Eau de Toilette
by Escentric Molecules

The Scoop
Ambroxan is the ingredient around which Molecule 02 orbits around exclusively (sister scent Escentric 02 blends the note with others). Natural ambroxan is one of the lusted after components of ambergris, the prohibitively costly, rare excretion of a sperm whale. To be absolutely honest, when we tried this, we were shocked by its subtlety…and we mean subtle. In fact, all we can smell is a smooth, skin-like, we-can’t-put-our-finger-on-it fragrance afterthought that might as well be our own skin…but it isn’t. There is a slight mineral-like edge to it but it’s transparent and mild…if you’re the type of person who can instantly tell the taste of plain water versus a mineral water like Evian, you’ll instantly pick up on the gentle nuances of Molecule 02. To sum it up, Molecule 02 is very light yet always present and hovering about four inches above where you applied it, especially after a few hours. The term “skin scent” has never been more embodied than in this perfume and we bet it will both fascinate and confuse perfume lovers for a long time to come. If there’s anyone in your life who “can’t stand perfume”, you’ve just found a little bottle of perfection for them.

I am well aware of the inexpensive amount of Ambroxan, but I have to give it to G.S...he took one aroma chemical and made it into something that fragrantly twists and turns according to one's body chemistry. Every time I wear this, I get followed, asked what I'm wearing, smiled at, and people tend to stand extra close to me when speaking. This fragrance is unlike anything that I've smelled, and it puts me in a great mood.

I have to say, it certainly does take *something* -- maybe 'chutzpah' is the word I'm looking for? -- to sell a 10% dilution of Ambroxan in alcohol for more than a dollar a ml. I mean, this is for real, right? It's not a joke? Ambroxan is an extremely inexpensive aroma chemical. It's not one of those patented chemicals that the perfumeries keep a guarded secret, either. It's an inexpensive, publicly-available chemical. You can buy it online for peanuts. Seriously, this stuff is dirt cheap. For the price of a bottle of this "perfume," you could make gallons of it yourself, at home. I mean, you could *bathe* in it, if you really wanted to. Crazy world, man. Crazy world.

Exactly the same experience as the fellow towards the bottom of the posts - within a couple minutes of spraying, it was completely gone. Zip, zero, nothing but an oily spot on my skin to show that something was actually sprayed there. I have a sensitive nose and great skin chemistry for scents; I have never ever had anything completely disappear without the slightest trace like this one does. It smelled interesting for the 90 seconds it was detectable, but then - nada! If anything, it's remarkable for that quality and little else. Too bad, I would've liked to have experienced it a little longer...

I had the opportunity to smell real ambroxan/ambergis some years ago. Molecule 02 dry down does smell similar but very very faint in comparison. When first applied Molecule 02 smelled like rubbing alcohol. Ten minutes later it had a sublte skin scent quality and last for about 2 1/2 hours. Seems overpriced, but I may buy it anyway

This has got to be the best fragrance I've gotten in a very long time. A few days ago, I went to appointment and some people were saying that someone was smelling so incredible and one of the women said that she had to know what that fragrance is, I just sat back and heard them describe what they thought of it. I left, and had to return 2 hours later and heard some of them say that the person with the scent had returned and saying how wonderful it was. I did not say that it was me because the didn't ask me directly and for fear of seeming arrogant. It is a definite keeper! LOVE LOVE IT!~

My daughter tried this, and instantly remarked on how it made her "skin smell good". As opposed to other scents that sit on top of the skin, this fragrance blends with your body chemistry flawlessly, to provide a scent that seems to belong on you, as opposed to a scent you have consciously applied. As a result, it smells different in the bottle than on your skin. Only when applied can one appreciate the sweetness and subtle undertones of this fragrance. The only drawback is the fact that the scent fades quickly, as one would see in cheaper perfumes, and requires repeated applications as opposed to the fragrances of Creed, which require only a small amount and linger all day. Not a great fragrace for a day at work because of this, but well suited for a quick application just before cuddling up next to someone special.

What are you paying for when you buy a perfume composed of a single chemical diluted to maybe 10% concentration. The chemical itself is dirt cheap - the total cost of the perfume in the bottle is surely less than $1. Normally you'd be paying for the artistic value, but what artistic value is there in tossing only a single chemical (and yes, that is all Molecule 01 and 02 are, a single [and inexpensive] synthetic aromachemical heavily diluted in alcohol) in a bottle? That packaging surely isn't worth $140. This company is a joke and an insult to the perfume industry and the consumers. Please do not support them with your hard earned money. You could make your own version.. many many ounces.. of either Molecule 01 or 02 for less than $10, including shipping costs.

Since posting the last review a few months ago, I have since purchased a bottle of the M02. After about 10 min. I cannot smell it at all! The lasting power of M01 is great! Wish I had replaced my "almost" empty bottle of M01 with another M01 instead of the 02.

At first I really didn't like this. I have M. 01 which is my favorite fragrance, I love it! So, I compared 02 to 01 and felt like it didn't quite measure up. But, upon trying my sample again several times, it's kind of grown on me. I really like it now and am considering buying a bottle. Lasting power is pretty good and it seems a little "sweeter" scented than 01.

Oooh, I like this! I got a sample of this and Escentric 02, and while I am not enamoured of Escentric 02, I am pleasantly surprised by how wearable Molecule 02 is on me. I'm not sure if this is a good description, but it's like wearing a scented candle - there's a general pleasant smell in the air, but it's not obvious where the scent is coming from. It's subtle, I guess, but not too subtle imho, I can definitely smell this long after I've put some on. I am tempted to buy a bottle of this.

It smells like cedar to me. So I feel like I smell like a closet now, not subtly "skin-scented" at all.

While this is no where near as discernable as 01 Molecule, it does have it's own slight presence. It leaves a lot to the imagination.

Maybe I should have purchased directly from Aedes, but the Molecule 02 I received from Lucky Scent dissipates so quickly that no one can smell it - even up close (minutes after application). The Molecule 01 I purchased from Aedes lasts FOREVER.

I tried to post the address from whence my last post came, but can't because of Lucky Scent's java language filter. The article is prefaced by a rather lengthy description of real ambergris and its natural, humane origins. The beginning of my posted quote would have readers believing otherwise.

"Since the use of animal products in perfumery is no longer considered ethical (the Washington treaty for example bans the hunting of musk deer and whales), ambergris has been replaced by an array of synthetics e.g., Ambroxan (Henkel), and Grisalva (IFF) etc. Ambroxan is synthesized from sclareol, a diterpene alcohol present in Clary Sage (from Salvia sclarea). These synthetic products have a cleaner more intense amber quality, but none of the subtlety and smoothness of the natural material. Ambergris/amber has performed an important role in perfumery for centuries, being used to impart a radiant, intense long lasting, and animalic/ambery quality to both male and female fine fragrances (some authorities, such as Poucher 1936, describe the effect as “velvety”). Ambergris notes are an essential part of more recent male fragrances such as Cool Water, Drakkar Noir and Zino Davidoff. The material was also formerly used for its fixative qualities, and was noted in its ability to bring eau-de-colognes especially “alive”. Synthetic amber chemicals perform an important function in fabric softener fragrances, due to their powerful substantivity."

"sperm whale amberbris" ambergris was misspelled. home.earthlink.net/~skinesscentuals/Amber.htm

first to clarify, amber has nothing to do with the fossilized resin often used in jewelry. there is no such thing as amber essential oil. when speaking of amber, the reference is to: • ambergris: amberbris comes from the sperm whale, which feeds on cuttlefish. the cuttlefish have sharp claws that irritate the stomach of the whale. in response, the whale produces a viscous liquid which coats and protects the stomach lining. an accumulation of this is regurgitated and eventually floats to shore where, with exposure to sun and air, it oxidizes and hardens to a translucent waxy substance. this substance used to be obtained directly from the gut, (at the expense of the whale), but since these practices are now prohibited, the only ambergris available is that which the whale expells. these rare bits of ambergris are highly treasured and, when found, are converted to the precious oil. since true ambergris oil is rare and prohibitively expensive, any oil so labeled is more than likely a fragrance oil. • or it may refer to an essential oil (e.g. labdanum): chemical compounds responsible for an ambergris-like odor are found in some plants; the rockrose is one of them. • or it refers to a blend: amber blends are used extensively in perfumes where the actual blend itself is usually proprietary. the blend featured here is malleable and lends itself to personal interpretation. not only can the proportions of the listed components be altered, you can add your own personal touches (e.g. balsam peru, patchouli, vetiver; even lavender absolute) ... you can add oak moss to produce a "chypre" base blend ... it can be whatever you want. in addition to standing well on its own, this blend serves wonderfully as a base note or a component of a base note ...with excellent fixative properties.

Guys (ladies), please STOP with the sperm whale talk. Get a clue. Pretty much everything put into most fragrances nowdays is synthetically created in a lab from petroleum and other organic type sources. Almost anything found normally in nature is too rare, too expensive (think 'rare'), or protected. So...companies like Givaudan or International Flavors and FRAGRANCES *sample*, analyze, reverse engineer, and then create (on mass scale) the various chemicals that cause things in real life to smell the way they do. If you want something to smell like the musk from a deer, you only need ONE deer brought in from the side of a road because a car accidently hit it. Then you use computers and equipment and other whizzy stuff like you see in the Bat Cave to COPY the essential scent components of a musk deer. Etc. Jeez. Use google sometime.

The description about this is some what CONFUSING..is this product actually made from harvesting sperm whales!! I know in other countries this practice is still done,BUT...it isnt ethical,to kill whales, like they did in the 'good ol days'

It's hard to rate a scent that is practically nonexistant!! I didn't give it 1 star because when I CAN smell it, it doesn't stink. It is VERY soft and basically just a slight hint of powder on my skin. No subliminal effect on me. I do not find myself craving this as others suggested. Using a soft scented shower gel would leave me with a similiar impression. Pass.....

Molecule 02 took a while to warm up on my skin. Where other fragrances start out loud and clear, Molecule 02 was shy and needed a minute to work up it's courage. It is indeed light, but it is also definitely there. In my review for Escentric 02 I mentioned how that fragrance reminded me of CdG Synthetic: Soda. Molecule 02 gets rid of the Soda-like component, but it's still sexy. If Escentric 02 is the confident popular girl, Molecule 02 is her bookish sister who doesn't yet know how cute she really is. This fragrance seems to come and go, but the whole Escentric Molecule line has a satisfactory lasting power, compared with many of the CdG fragrances I've tried.

I've got over 100 colognes and *never* have been anosmic (unable to smell) anything. I also think Escentric 01 (Molecule 01 is ok) is pure genius (try if you haven't. really!). Despite that, my sample of Molecule 02 smells like nothing. Zip. If I try really hard I can smell a bit of something similar to Iso E (Molecule 01), but i could be dreaming. So...you better get a sample first (I did) or you may wonder what you bought. Maybe it's just me and I can't smell the ingredients...but that has *never* happened before with anything.

i have no real idea what this scent is about, having just read about it today. But what is posted is so tenuous, so lacking substance, that I would guess this is the perfume equivalent of The Emperor's New Clothes. Perhaps you cannot smell the scent because there IS NO SCENT! It's a brilliant advertising ploy.

I love the way this is warm yet fresh. It reminds me of Philosophy's Message in a Bottle from five or so years ago, but much better. I will admit to being influenced by the descriptions of a scent. The aging of ambergris is romantic. This delivers.
