Bois d’Iris
Eau de toilette
by The Different Company

The Scoop
A breathtaking rendering of iris, Bois d’Iris is, as its name points out, a woody iris. Iris (or orris root) is used in perfumery to recreate the much-loved scent of violet. Harvested from the rugged hills of Tuscany, iris pallida is the most aromatic of its kind (and is legendary among perfume makers). The mild earth gives this rare iris its unique character—never too sweet and never powdery. Add a touch of sweet, velvety green and deep wood, and the result is Bois d’Iris, a gorgeous symphony of a fragrance that’s cool, clean and ethereal with a huge dash of mystery. Uncommon and like no other.
Bois d’Iris Notes

I like this scent, if there was a clean-smelling, sophisticated version of violet candy, this is what it would smell like. (Does that make sense to anyone else?) It's a balanced sweet fragrance. However, no staying power! You'll get 3 hours tops. Buy it only if you're fine with reapplying all day.

I liked this scent. Not enough to spring for the full size, but I like iris and this is well done. It's really earthy and a little musky. The dry down was giving me notes of clove/licorice, but that could have just been my skin's reaction to the fragrance. I liked it, but this isn't something I see myself wearing often.

So, first off, I love this fragrance. Just be prepared for a really realistic iris root, and depending on your nose, that might mean you'll smell carrot for the first few minutes. After that you'll have a beautifully woodsy, wet, and earthy scent that will linger discretely with you all day.

Its the type of fragrance that is beautiful and yet elusive. I can imagine Jane Birkin or Francoise Hardy wearing it, drinking coffee on a left bank cafe, with her intello boho chums. Its androgynous, without being sexless or antifemme. It elegantly combines female and male elements in dialectical fashion, ceding ultimately to the female part of the equation. It is a completely different rendition from other Iris scents (Lutens or Le labo), I know; it morphs over time from a slightly spicy scent into a more cool oriental one. Striking. Beautiful. Enigmatic. Won't dissapoint.

I don't know what it is - maybe the cedar and something - that creates a troublesome "celery" odor for me here. It's the same problem I have with Un Parfum des Sens et Bois - another one I almost love... just can't get past the boiled celery....

I will be the odd-woman-out here. I loved this scent on me, and was ready to buy it until I saw all the comments about this being for men. Now I'm re-thinking a bit, but I don't think this smelled "masculine" on me. It's certainly not girly-feminine, but I think a woman could wear this. It certainly lasts, and until the final drydown has a gorgeous floral, powdery - but very soft - scent. I love it.

I sprayed this on and was blown away by how beautiful it was. And so spicy, I loved it! Perfect fragrance. And then it became extremely woody. It smells like a men's cologne. Sigh.. And I was all ready to order TWO bottles.

This is an amazing scent for men, although it is very floral. It lasts forever on my skin and the smallest of drops goes a long way. It smells like springtime in Munich. I wear it all the time and get compliments from men and women both. The best of the line from The Different Company.

Iris - I thought , not a man's scent - but another friend and lucky scents addict had a sample. I tried it - She loved it on me , very green/plant like and floral but then ! the drydown -and in 20 minutes it was spicy enough for me to feel it was or could be a guy's scent. I'm Xtremely fussy but this is VERY unique. Almost a kind of galbanum note with the Orris and woody rooty genius of this brew. The spice almost borders on an incense like smell , but in a perfect way. Long to semi- long lasting. Think of Keiko "Oliban" but in an Iris/Orris version. I have it on order of course. Wonderful overall- there's nothing I don't like here.

This perfume is pleasant and unobjectionable, but in my view quite unsuccessful. Though the TDC's use of natural ingredients is immediately perceptible and much appreciated, there is no synergy among the elements.

I'll be the lone dissenter in this bunch. I thought this fragrance was awful. It smelled like dead leaves to me.

Poetry in a bottle. What a beautiful scent: woody, cool, a bit mysterious, with a warmer and sweeter drydown. A definite must-have for me!

Warm and soft Iris, not too woody, or musky. Sweet, but not too sweet. I don't get any spicy notes. I really like this one. It lasts about half a day on me.

I was somewhat amazed how much I liked this. Men don't usually wear iris based fragrances, but this one is so mellow in the dry down that's it's hard NOT to like it. The staying power for a fragrance of this kind is quite long. Will wear again!!

It goes on just slightly spicy, then turns into a soft, sweet, warm and subtle scent. This is the kind of fragrance that encourages someone else to get closer to smell it. I accidentally layered it with Aroma M Blanche and it smelled divine (just make sure you don't put too much Blanche since it's much stronger than Bois d'Iris). Let's hope DC comes out with a longer-lasting version of this! It's really lovely.
