Harissa
Eau de Toilette
by Comme des Garcons Series 2: Red

The Scoop
Harissa is based on the famous fiery Moroccan spice of the same name. We're going to tell you this right upfront: if you love blood oranges but are bored by the same ol' one-dimensional citrus scents, this one will send you into fits of extreme joy. Harissa starts off as a hot, spiced tomato that lays heavy on the orange. Its searing heat almost convinced us that it was actually hot when we applied (must've been our imagination). The spice and fruit combo eventually mellows and gives way to a ripe blood orange tempered by the anise-like herb of angelica. If you like Tabasco in your Bloody Mary, Harissa will get your blood boiling in happiness.
Harissa Notes
harissa, North African blood orange, red chili pepper, angelica, saffron, nutmeg from Grenada, cardamon, tomato

Like other reviewers, I get the food references. On me, this comes off with heavy tomato notes, with saffron, orange, and cloves thrown in. It is a little too food driven for me. I get the meat and bloody mary references.

For me, this has a strong, pungent start of fruit with an edge that tickles the back of my throat. The lengthy middle passage is an incense that never veers toward sweet. The finish is pure clove, as if I'd put my nose in the spice jar. Wish I like clove...

Refreshingly different, yet also earthy with just a touch of unmentionable humidity. Red Harissa has a green hint, but not herbal in the traditional way. A bit grassy. Of course the grassy note is only backdrop, as the spicy red chili and saffron notes jump in full force. Not merely harsissa, but harissa ground outside on a fresh summer morning, as the chef prepares his mise en plas for the meal of the day. Sharp, multi dimensional and not an everyday frag. Decidedly excellent when you want to wake up and shake up the change of pace.

Six years ago Aveda killed my favorite scent. I have looked for a new signature scent. I have found a lot of amazing colognes, and when I got the sample I never really dreamed this would be the one. It's not even close to the scent I lost but it captures my heart the same way. One of the other reviews said it and I find it to be truth... "This is what a man should smell like"

This smelled kind of nice, but it reminded me of something that I couldn't quite figure out. Then, I realized that it smells exactly like an Atomic Fireball - the candy.

I have to update about this one, because it has evolved into one of my favorite all time scents. I wish I got the tomato and saffron, maybe they blend with something else and my nose just can't pick them out. I do get the angelica, the spiciness of the harissa, the blood orange and the cardamom. I go through a lot of samples, and I rarely finish them. With Harissa, I not only finished my sample, but I finished an 8ml decant as well. For me, this is perfect for summer, or any time I need to feel like summer. Also, this is one of the few that I feel is actually full-bottle worthy.

I love everything I've sampled in the Red series. The carnation is my favorite, with this as a close second. It has a very fresh, bright quality and is so unique! There truly is nothing else like it.

Hmmmm. Not sure about this one. As someone said, it smells too much like curry and tomatoes. I LOVE spicy, woody, oriental fragrances, but this one is too "main course" for me. I prefer to smell this in a restaurant, not on me.

This doesn't smell like tomatoes. Harissa is almost extraterrestrial its so weird. Its cool and crisp yet burning with a citrus passion. The top note smells a little like Ajax on porcelin and underneath is a swarthy martini bar clouded with high class cigar smoke. Then comes the blood orange and exotic spice and the senses passout and have to be taken home by taxi. One of the standouts of Cdg's entire fragrance collection but not always practical.

i first bought this at the insistence of a friend who declared that "all men should smell like this". i'd have to say i agree--harissa is a complex scent and i have never received as many compliments as i have after i started wearing it. my local shop stopped carrying it--i was ecstatic when i found it at lucky scent.

it smells like a bloody mary and then it changes and it reeks of clove. the clove part made me feel like i was a holiday ham or something. no thanks

I think this one has a lot to do with body chemistry. Because it smelled quite nice from the bottle, but when I put it on my skin, in about a few seconds it ended up smelling like food. I can definitely smell the spicy tomato and for some reason all I can think of when I smell this is beef. I think because it smells like spices you would put into a foreign beef stew or something. Can't quite place it. But this is definitely not how I want to smell. I completely agree with the other reviewer who said it's like having spilt food on your wrist. 9 hours after the drydown, I still feel like it smells like tandoori chicken or something.

I am completely in love with this fragrance! And yet I can completely understand the reviews by people that hated it--on me, I smell the blood oranges, then tomato, and then something deeper that is vaguely like... BO. But in the sexiest possible way! It is what you would smell like after spending the day in a north african kitchen... while guzzling sangria... and taking a break to make love to a sweaty, swarthy guy with a moustache. Very sensual, very foody, and very dirty too.

Harissa smells exactly like food, and not in a good, gourmand way, but like I spilled some dinner on my skin and I can't scrub it off. I wanted to like it, but it's dreadful. It's like being in a really cheap Moroccan restaurant where people spill things and the floors aren't washed very often.

I wish this lasted longer, CGD might do well to make extreme versions of their scents. It didn;t remind me of Christmas, but it did evoke a memory of taking my friend to a Morrocan restaurant to explore my heritage.

Hmm..this is really a spicy-ish scent. It really smells like traditional christmas spices, and nothing else to me. And that's basicaly it. If you'd wear it, people would probably think of christmas holidays when you walk by. I wouldn't buy this for myself but rather to have it as a room scent and shower my apartment with it around christmas time.

The red series for me is the best. Especially for men. This scent is absolutely amazing. There is an indescribable scent and deliciousness to it. A hint of anise, very light. Sometimes woodsy and sometimes bubbly like soda pop. I put it on in the morning around 8 am and can still smell it as I am walking around at 2pm. Pretty good staying power. I bought it as a sample and am considering getting the full-size now! Didn't really smell the blood orange or tomato, but can get a sense of that. But it is blended wonderfully and I can't stop smelling myself. Even though I put drugstore lotion on, I can still smell it wafting off me. The lasting power is amazing, but it is not an overpowering scent that is too strong.

Harissa is my everyday wear for almost two years now. I just love it! Fits me perfect and at partys I always get positive comments of all kinds! :)

Disappointed. It smelled like an antiseptic mouthwash on me! Then it dries down to a green mouthwash. Maybe I should gargle with it?

I love Harissa. It smells like all that you love about Christmas. It smells like those oranges that you poked cloves in! It is like your childhood Christmas memories put in a bottle. Very clever scent.

This is my favorite of the CDG Series 2. The drydown is awesome. I put it on at 7:00AM and I can still smell myself just before I called it a day at about 12 midnight. Now that's staying power!

Spicy, citrusy and masculine. I think it will smell good on my husband. It smells like tomato juice on me with a dash of tabasco and lemon. I think I will wear it to my next Sunday brunch! I much prefer to smell like sweeter edibles --- carnation in this series is more suited for my taste.

Mmmm... a spicy scent that reminded me of cinnamon and Red Hots. Only thing was, it turned really masculine on me so I gave it to my husband. Now I can enjoy it on him!

I can't believe this is a citrus scent. I've been trying to place the notes all day and could not. It's spicy--almost woodsy--but also soft and mildly sweet. I've never smelled anything quite like it! The tomato note is barely there but it lends an interesting freshness. The best description I can think of for it is spicy fresh.

Incredible! The discriptions Lucky Scent gives is perfect. I have never smelt a perfume with such a unique intense spice scent. A perfect scent for the winter. Once again I am amazed by Comme des Garcons unique mixing of scents.
