L'air de Rien
Eau de Parfum
by Miller Harris

The Scoop
L'Air de Rien was created uniquely for Jane Birkin, a famous French singer and actress, as an olfactory interpretation of her life. Inspired by her favorite smells of father's pipe, floor polish, empty chest of drawers, old forgotten houses, the scent creates an atmospheric effect. The juxtaposition of hay-like, bitter oakmoss with warm, animalic musk evokes images of classic English mansions, old leather furniture, dry flowers as well as vintage chypre fragrances. With its unusual, somewhat quirky character, L'Air de Rien manages to be an incredibly exquisite oriental, marked by sensual, ambery-vanillic drydown. It melds with your skin and wears like the softest leather.

Well, I DID buy a full flacon of this... of that tells you anything. My update on my below comment would be: This a warm, charming simple little funk-- a dark-pitched, concentrated little nut of a scent--- to keep you company as you be-bop around on a crisp afternoon. Perfect for jeans and t-shirt. Easily unisex.

I'm quite intrigued by this one. I absolutely do get the aroma of an empty drawer (in which things were once kept). This a musty, slightly woody, slightly spicy, slightly musky scent. Ambient, in the mood of a MESSE DE MINUIT. It has a charming, nutty, offbeat quality. Nostalgically masculine. It reminded me pleasantly of WILDROOT, the men's hair cream of the 1940's and 50's. I wouldn't read it as an Oriental at all, but that's just me. Were this not so outrageously expensive, I'd buy a full flacon.

LOVE LOVE LOVE. The only MH I have found that is wonderful on me, no skank, blended beautifully. Fantastic!

Barnyard? Animalic? Skanky? I WISH! God this is sooo boring! My skin turns it to pure amber and bland spice. Much like a cheap men's cologne that a young teen would get at the drugstore. Yecchh! In case anyone still wants it, it does last well and has moderate sillage.

On me this fragrance is powdery and musky from beginning to end - lovely. Plus it is really long lasting. I put a drop on from a 1ml sample vial during the afternoon, and I could still smell it faintly the next morning.

I tried a sample of this before I knew about its reputation—the “stale joss sticks,” the “barnyard” smell, the old lady in the oven… I loved it. It’s a sort of creamy, cashmere-like scent, a bit sweet with the vanilla and amber, and certainly there’s lots of musk but to me it doesn’t seem like the “dirty” musk some others seem to get from it. After I read others’ reviews, I was worried that maybe I’m anosmatic to something in here—maybe there’s a whole lot of some kind of musk that I’m not smelling? But I still love it, and my husband likes it too. This will be the next full bottle purchase for me.

Well, it wasn't for me, but I can't say that the fragrance is bad. Sadly, my chemistry made this into something so skanky that drove right past "naughty" and ended up in "unhygienic/barnyard." I wish you all better luck with it!

I was surprised to read some of the other reviews- it must be a matter of chemistry, but this scent is stunningly gorgeous to/on me. It starts with warm musk and amber, then the most wonderful animalic note takes over; at this stage I wish I could just chew on this fragrance it works so well. I don't usually like to notice vanilla but it works so well with the animal-house-at-the-zoo (in a good way!) quality. The drydown becomes more powdery and dusty but doesn't really lose any of the earlier notes, they just fade into the background, and it is long-lasting. I find L'air de Rien to be incredibly beautiful; it may very well end up becoming my signature scent.

Very floral, couldnt smell the vanille at all. It reminded me of the smell of linden flower. Might be good for people who love fresh and spring-like scents.

I think I have found my signature scent. I love this perfume. I first read about it in "Perfumes The Guide". Mr. Turin describes it as smelling like "stale joss sticks, boozy kisses, rising damp, and soiled underwear". Who could resist that. Not me. I fell in love straight away and am about to start on my second bottle ( all in the space of one month). Perhaps it's because I am so terribly English, but it does take me straight back to my miss-spent youth, in London during the seventies. I can add to Mr. Turins list, Paddington railway station early in the morning, a shared flat off the Bayswater road, damp pavements and lthe interior of those black cabs on a rainy day, absolutely wonderful, Thank you Jane Birken and Ms. Harris

I laughed out loud when I read some of the other reviewers comments about the [old lady geriatric and terrible chemistry] of this perfume. I have never in my life smelled something in the bottle smell so reasonable and within seconds find myself in a state of utter disdain for a scent. The instant L'air de Rien hit my skin I smelled my grandmother, and not in the good way. More like at the “God rest her soul end days” when things weren't looking too good, I hope I do not need to elaborate any further. Nonetheless, this could possibly be a really lovely fragrance if you have compatible chemistry. With that, this is certainly a “buy a sample first” kind of perfume, hands down. The fact that it is so sensitive to body chemistry could potentially prove to be magical for the right person. For me, it was easily the most horrible and alarming perfume experiences I have ever had. On my skin, and I usually wear Orientals and cyphres, so I have a high tolerance for controversial scents, this was the most disgusting fragrance I have ever smelled, hands down. I must say though, that it does make me laugh just to think about the horror, so for that L'air de Rien will always be memorable.

All right, who put the old lady in the oven - heavily peppered and dusted with foot powder? Allow me to cyberslap you, Miller Harris. How dare you let loose such a fetid stench on this good green earth. How dare you, Sirs. What did Jane Birken ever do to you? Did she describe to you a geriatric hospice with the thermostat set at a steady 84 degrees, rife with the reek and fog of Shower to Shower and the hope that you would capture that, in her memory, to her honor, for all the world's horror? Beasts.

I had heard scary comments about this one smelling like a barnyard, but on me it is delightfully light and faintly sweet, reminds me of the wonderful Coeur d'Ete. Definitely FBW for a summer scent.

This is awful. Maybe it's a chemistry thing, but L'Air de Rien just stinks on my skin. It reeks horridly... and it stays... and stays.... A pity, since I loved the concept.

I'm disappointed in this fragrance. I found it painfully ordinary. It started out powdery, then turned vaguely metallic. Jane Birkin never struck me as the spinster aunt sort but that is the ultimate impression it left with me.

Let's be honest -- Jane Birkin may be fabulous herself, but this perfume just plain reeks. It is woefully musty and old fashioned -- the only person I could envision wearing this thing on a daily basis a blue haired old l ady in a sad old mink. To me, "refined" does not equal "headache inducing" and "turpentine".

I remain wowed by Miller Harris. This is not so much a scent as a Proustian memory. It is definetly a leisure time, private time in jeans and tee in a backyard garden scent.

This perfume is lovely. Soft and very refined to my nose, if you don't like leather, don't worry, whatever leather is in here only adds to the pillowy plushness. This is an almost edible fragrance of the most sublime amber/oriental type. Luckily on me. it stops just short of evolving into a playdoh scent. Instead there are subtle threads of wood (like being back in an old beloved home, not like being in a wood cutter worfshop!), and sweetly balsamic tones enfolded in a velvet fluff of amber. The amber here is not the sickenly sweet overbearing type. It is the powdery type. I happen to love powder, so it is even better for me. Overall, a sophisticated skin scent and for me, at the top of Miller Harris' collection. I do love Fleurs Oriental as well, but this one is much less heavy and I think this would be fine for warmer weather. Oh dear, I'm afraid this is going to be a must have for me.

Jane Birkin has lived in France for so long, sings and acts in French, (and was married for years to the iconic French singer Serge Gainsbourg) that she is one of the proud and few to be adopted as French by the French people.
