Petite Mort (Parfum d’une Femme)
Perfume
by Marc Atlan

The Scoop
This fragrance is not really a classic scent. It is more the representation of a spiritual state, based on the paradox of an impossible ephemerality. It is perfume as art, the olfactory preservation of a moment, so that it may live forever.

Bertrand Duchaufour is the nose whose talent was able to distill this ultimate human extract into a scent. His alchemy blends the raw components that trigger our most primal reactions. Petite Mort’s fragrance exudes an animal carnality with salty hints of sweat and urea.

As uncompromising as the project itself, the fragrance is explosively intense. Each bottle holds only 10 ml of dark, viscous, pure perfume with a flash of amethyst. The strongest perfume extracts typically contain between 10% and 40% of aromatic compounds. Petite Mort™ contains 100%. Its dosage is a single drop.

Limited edition to 100 bottles worldwide.

First reaction was fear. This scent should not come out of a bottle. Very human but not sexual/female/male more primitive - earlier- more baby/mom skin. Had a child smell on Mom - she loved it. Definitely an accomplishment for all involved. Would love to play with this on various body areas and see what happens. A bit scary and I don't mean the price. Scent at another level. Bravo Bertrand!

This is odd indeed and it does change over time as others have described. I purchased a sample - an itty bitty tiny little sample of about 2 drops but that is all you need. As it is applied it smelled like paper and electricity to me, burning wires almost (but not smoky at all). Then it goes sort of floral-y in a very subtle way for a bit. Then I forgot about it until 2 hours later when my wrist started itching madly! A whiff at that time revealed a musky scent that was um - feminine, salty and a tad sweaty but pleasant enough. The itch went away as quickly as it came and the scent changed back to paper and electrical current with a deeper undertone I can't identify. Nice and certainly unusual but the cost of a full bottle is prohibitive for me personally.

Bought this out of curiosity and because Bertrand Duchaufour's contribution to Amouage Jubilation XXV is one of my top 5 favorites. Got bottle number 22, if you're curious. Petit Mort is not floral, not spicy, not skanky, nor woody, not citrus, nor musky. It's something different entirely. Words fail me to describe the smell. Better to desribe the experience. At first I found it neutral or even slightly unpleasant, but as it evolved over the next several hours, I found myself going back to smell again and again. Primal. Carnal. It's neither masculine nor feminine, just lust. On my lady's neck, especially around hour 3 or 4, it's like a magnet. I can't stay away. We'd both give it a 5 if it were more pleasant to the nose, at first, but it's definitely worth the wait. Next, we'll try it on my own neck to see if my lady has the same response I did. Wish me luck!

I would consider this more of an experience than a fragrance. One drop goes a long way and the scent is a series of layers that reveal themselves as hours go on. I think so far, hour 5 or 6 is my favorite. What's really fascinating is the reactions from others that smell it, which is almost a carnal instinct. There really is something about it that triggers something inside me. It's not a fragrance I wear every day, mainly because it's so limited. But when I do, whether it's a special occasion or just another day of work, I feel so privileged to be one of the exclusive people to experience it.
