Comme des Garçons Parfums strikes up a partnership with the artist Jun Takahashi, designer of the cult Japanese label Undercover, with two fragrances inspired by the Graces, weird stuffed-toy creatures handmade by Mr. Takahashi out of teddy bears and rhinestone jewelry. The Graces, he explains, are “white, fluffy creatures with luminous eyes. Generally peaceful towards humans, they might become defiant due to their territorial nature. It is advised to keep at a cautious distance from them.”
Holygrace, the scent dedicated to the “mother” Grace, is every bit as strange and dreamlike as the creature that inspired it: a warm-cool, beautifully rounded potion of ginger, jasmine and vanilla with a faint ozonic wisp. But beware. The brief called for “soap” and “poison” – fairy godmother and evil stepmother rolled into one – and there’s quite a bit of red pepper sprinkled into those soft, cuddly notes. This hand-sewn teddy bear might still have a few pins sticking out of its fur. Quirky, compelling and utterly, irresistibly Japanese.
