Xerjoff describes Esquel as a floral fougere, a type of fragrance known for its fresh lavender and earthy oak moss. Few fougeres are created for women. With Esquel, Xerjoff follows in the footsteps of great perfumes such as the legendary Jicky and the gorgeous Moment Supreme from the 1930s. As we first sniff Esquel, a resinous, high quality lavender greets our nose. However, Xerjoff is not content simply to create a beautiful, feminine fougere, rare as they might be. Instead, Esquel soon takes us down another, stunning olfactory trail toward warm wood and vanilla. We soon learn that Esquel’s beauty is not just in its refreshing aroma or its unusual patrimony, but in the surprising but rewarding journey through which the fragrance leads us.
Esquel opens with a rich, clean lavender and bergamot bouquet as invigorating as a spring morning. Pink pepper enlivens the fragrance, and iris and rose give it body and allure. Just when you think you understand Esquel as a clean cologne-like scent, it begins to transform. Its woody base rises to warm the fresh perfume. After a few hours, vanilla, lush tonka, and a hint of patchouli take over the herbal aspects of the fragrance creating an intimate, almost oriental feel. Soon, a vanillic whisper of the best quality sandalwood radiates from skin. Esquel is a study in enigma, but like the movement from day to night, from spring to autumn, her changes are gloriously natural. We luxuriate in Esquel every step of the way.
