Midnight in Paris
Eau de Parfum
by Van Cleef & Arpels

The Scoop
An appartment on the Champ de Mars. On the stroke of twelve, the Eiffel tower sparkles with hundreds of glittering lights against the blue velvet backdrop of the Seine. Logs crackle in the fireplace; a delicate, leathery smokiness rises from the Lapsang Souchong in the teacups; pastries on a Sèvres porcelain dish give off a sweet aroma of almond and vanilla… It’s midnight in Paris, and it’s the warm, refined atmosphere conjured by Van Cleef and Arpels’ latest fragrance.

As he did in the masterful Dior Homme, Olivier Polge, who co-authored the scent with Domitille Bertier (the team also worked on Flowerbomb along with Carlos Benaïm), has skewed this masculine scent towards more feminine notes by wrapping the leather and black tea accords in soft balsams -- tonka bean, with its almond and nearly chocolate-y facets, and benzoin, with its cinnamon and vanilla effects. Lily-of-the-valley lightens the blend with its floral green freshness. If you thought Bulgari Black was a bit too much of a rough ride, and crave an alternative to Dior Homme, Midnight in Paris is a perfect compromise, and better than a compromise: a masculine fragrance so good it’s bound to be filched by women, and one of the best launches in 2010.

Started out interesting with strong, warm floral notes, but the dry down was pure talc. I can't stand the smell of talc, aside from on a baby. I'm sure it's just my body chemistry, but even after scrubbing with a luffa in the shower I could still smell it. A dousing of Craft by Andrea Maack finally washed out the talc scent completely.

This is one of my favorite from last year. It's many layers are so well blended and develop so seamlessley that you can't help but find yourself in awe with what transpires on your skin. This fragrance really is a work of art. It starts with an almost upside down (if you will) opening of soft-musky leather. As it warms up, a tart & slightly metallic tea - laced with citrus (lemon & bergamot) makes a hand-in-hand appearance with rosemary & lily of the valley; lending a fresh-greenness to the slightly animalic opening. As minutes progress into hours, the green/herbal quality makes way (for lack of better descriptive words-lol) to such an amazing, nutty, earthy, powdery, creamy sweetness that is attributed to the wonderful incense, tonka and benzoine trio. I know the note breakdown calls for vanilla and almond, however I believe that they are just olfactorial by-products of the trio. This is a beautiful fragrance. A must have (imo) for anyone that can appreciate fragrance as an art. Not only is it unique, but it smells divine and lasts until I wash it off (EDP). I truly wish those that don't like it would give it more of a chance and pay close attention to its details. Jaques Polge created another masterpiece (IMO). Thanks.

Vanilla from start to finish, so much so that the other notes are lost on me. Guess it goes to prove that what I like best about Bulgari Black is the black rubber note...

I must be anosmic to something in this - I can't smell it at all. Very odd, as it isn't supposed to be a big musk scent. Definitely try before buying.

Loved this at first, but the tobacco and leather die-down was just a touch too masculine for me. Definitely an androgynous scent, very interesting and full of layers.

There are those who will say that MiP is just a copy of Bvlgari Black. Granted - they are slightly similar in the mid-notes but my opinion is MiP is miles ahead in the drydown. One turns into a musky vanilla bomb then just fades into an attempt at 'leather' (?) - while Midnight stays bright with its incense, tea, benzoin/tonka mix and lets the reported almond and lily standout while simultaneously losing the 'rubber' note of the other. MUCH much better.
