An appartment on the Champ de Mars. On the stroke of twelve, the Eiffel tower sparkles with hundreds of glittering lights against the blue velvet backdrop of the Seine. Logs crackle in the fireplace; a delicate, leathery smokiness rises from the Lapsang Souchong in the teacups; pastries on a Sèvres porcelain dish give off a sweet aroma of almond and vanilla… It’s midnight in Paris, and it’s the warm, refined atmosphere conjured by Van Cleef and Arpels’ latest fragrance.
As he did in the masterful Dior Homme, Olivier Polge, who co-authored the scent with Domitille Bertier (the team also worked on Flowerbomb along with Carlos Benaïm), has skewed this masculine scent towards more feminine notes by wrapping the leather and black tea accords in soft balsams -- tonka bean, with its almond and nearly chocolate-y facets, and benzoin, with its cinnamon and vanilla effects. Lily-of-the-valley lightens the blend with its floral green freshness. If you thought Bulgari Black was a bit too much of a rough ride, and crave an alternative to Dior Homme, Midnight in Paris is a perfect compromise, and better than a compromise: a masculine fragrance so good it’s bound to be filched by women, and one of the best launches in 2010.
