Tilda Swinton Like This
Eau de Parfum
by Etat Libre d’Orange

The Scoop
With Like This, Etat Libre d’Orange pays homage to the intelligent and surreally beautiful actress Tilda Swinton. Etat’s challenge was immediate: to create a fragrance that reflects Swinton’s uncommon grace and talent. Like Swinton, the fragrance needed to be unusual yet welcoming, delicate yet strong, seductive without being distracting, and full of radiance. With Like This, they succeeded. Like This is unlike any other fragrance we've smelled, and yet it is as comfortable and warm as a summer afternoon in the Scottish hillside.

The fragrance opens with a juicy hit of neroli and mandarin, and it is quickly balanced by the earthiness of pumpkin flesh, a note rarely found in perfume. A thread of exotic immortelle and powdered ginger add both sweetness and spice to the composition. But don’t think Like This smells like the pantry— a lush bouquet of rose, heliotrope, and green vetiver are the foundation on which the scent is built, and a hint of clean musk adds intimacy. Like This wears for hours, yet stays close to the skin. Like This follows Swinton’s lead in breaking artistic convention. The only real way to understand either of them is to experience them.

Oh, I wanted to like this so badly but - yuck. Reminds me of something old and musty.

I see Like This as being gourmand only when you analyze and break down its ingredients one by one, but if you take a step back and experience it as a whole it's an overwhelmingly human scent. It evokes memories of old crushes. And despite Tilda Swinton's gender bending qualities, I find this to be a very feminine scent, to be worn by someone very sweet. I'd buy this for myself just to sniff, but I'd fall head over heels if I smelled it on someone else.

I was tempted to sample Like This, because other people thought it had gourmand notes. Alas, not on me. For me it's a kind-of-nice Rose scent with an awfully yucky undertow that I can't quite define. Is it sweaty leather on old gym furniture? A green note, similar to the plant-like overtone in Gordon's Dry Gin? Greased metal?

This is very foodie, especially with the pumpkin note. The initial notes are quite sweet and warming with a bitter undertone - I assume this is the neroli and ginger mixing with the basenotes. The drydown is a subtle mixture of sugar and spice. Reasonable sillage and longevity is a few hours. Very unusual!

Makes me think of cashmere sweaters and Autumn leaves crunching under my feet. Reminds me of Origins Ginger Essence spray, buy richer, longer lasting, and more complex.

I love Like This for the feeling it evokes. Home indeed. It just settles a part of my yearning, slightly homesick mind back to something familiar... and the indoor/outdoor dimension of the fragrance sustains those not yet arrived to the part of the journey leading back home.

This is like a Kinderegg: tre surprises in one! And all of them is gormandise. First a strong scent of spearmint. Really refreshing, but it is just the mint you feel. After a while it turns into a sharp but still sweet smell, like toffee with a bit to much of chemicals inside. It remains me of an old ladys perfume. After some hours, TSLT turns into the third surprise. Now it smells like soft licorice. But not in a sharp or hard way, more soft and mild and very pleasent. Interesting an exciting! I really like it, and if the heart note had been more like the top- or the base note, I would have given it the highest rating.

"Soft" is the keyword throught the development of LIKE THIS: TILDA SWINTON. Gracefully and softly, a tender pillow of unusual vegetal notes and gossamer spices emerge. An opening fresh ginger-root wavelet almost suggests a "cola" quality. A drydown that's transparent, soft and reassuring, gently sucré, almost-but-not-quite peppery, with a vaguely soap-like floralcy. This scent is going to find its lovers... and win them, hard.

'Like This' is breathtaking. When I wear it, it feels unmistakeably familiar, comforting yet with a hint of something unfamiliar (maybe it's the faintest trace of peppery ginger?). How Mathilde Bijaoui managed to translate the words of Rumi into a perfume is beyond me - it's like the perfect olfactory definition of his poem, familiar and transcendent within one instant. Maybe it's the way my chemistry reacts with the perfume, but I find it quite difficult to discern the individual notes as it develops. It does start off quite warm and bright, with a creamy blend of the pumpkin, mandarin and immortelle, almost like the spark of the first flame that lights a fire. It crackles for a little while, then dries down into soft, glowing embers ... still with the same creamy, gourmand edge but without the initial citrusy spike. It's a definite close-to-the-skin scent, not a shouty 'I'm a sexy perfume' ... it smells like me, only with a Swinton-esque edge. I only wish it came in a vat (and was sold more readily in Australia)!

I am surprised at the ultra-gourmand interpretations of this. To me, it smells like an instant, refined classic. It reminded me of my grandparent's houses in Scotland, something vaguely spicy, something regal, something infintely cozy and welcoming. I will be purchasing a bottle.

Opening: A bad cook smoking an orange-flavored cigar has just burned the overspiced pumpkin muffins. Dry-down: Now she washed them all away with soap. Interesting to sample, I cannot imagine wearing this.

Maybe you have to be a pale skinned red head for this to work? I love it. It's warm and delicious. I can't stop sniffing my own wrist.

I so wanted to like this. I think Tilda is great and I could sit and listen to her recite "Like This" for hours on end. The components of the scent were intriguing and should have at least had a shot to work on my skin. But there is something in all of the Etat Libre d' Orange that goes very artificial and wrong on my skin. It smelled like bug spray and I could barely discern the components. Dang.

When I first saw a Tilda Swinton inspired fragrance I was excited, but then I saw the packaging, orange? Really? The color of her hair? Very simplistic concept, as are the ingredients, pumpkin, as in orange, like her hair? Please. Such a magnificent actress deserves more than to be reduced that way. The fragrance, well, yes, it does smell like new car upholstery, on me it then dried down to almost nothing. Sorry, Tilda, someone else will get you right.

This is a lovely, down-and-dirty rose. Not for rose-haters. Not for the faint of heart. You must love the rose. You must love the skank. No foofy-girlie roses here, this rose rocks!

Eh. Interesting fragrance, not for me. I don't really think it smells particularly good and I'd never see myself wearing it.

Love it! On first spray, it smelled, weirdly, like a Jelly Bean (maybe an orange one?). That quickly goes away and settles into something warm and sunny. I can detect the ginger and the pumpkin. For some reason this scent feels familiar, even though I'm pretty sure I haven't smelled anything similar in a perfume. It smells like what I imagine a juicy shade of orange to smell like. A friendly scent. I want to wear it and be surrounded by my favorite people.

I wanted very badly to love this, as so many of my favorite perfume writers seem to. Alas, the only smell that stayed with me from when dabbed on my wrist was the smell of the interior of an airplane. There you have it. Airplane upholstery in a bottle.

This is a strange scent, in a good way. I first tried it in summer, and it was all wrong, but I knew it was intriguing. It's not sexy-it's more intellectual. Foody. A really weird blend of notes, which is fun on certain occasions. Worth a sniff!

Sample this one before you buy it! I'm so glad it worked so well for the other reviewers, but for me, it started as a borderline scrubber, then it turned pretty, then it turned to icky hairspray. Not something I want to purchase, or even try again.

Well, very interesting and complex scent, however, a little bit disappointing.

Forget like this. I love this. I ordered a sample and can't stop sniffing myself. Full bottle on the way. It is neither cloyingly sweet nor antiseptically citrusy. Very mellow but deep, Like This settles on you like warm, honeyed sunshine. It's amazing.
