“The spies of the Czar” is a fragrant story dripping with intensity (patchouli and Malfi lemon), sweetness (caramel, apple) and intrigue (sandalwood, musk and amber). Set in St. Petersburg in 1720, Tsar Peter the Great summons Anna, his favorite spy, and over a frozen lemon sorbet (Italian lemon) they discuss their plans to recruit an artist from under France’s King Louis XV and prove the Hermitage Museum a place of wonder to the world. On their journey, their horse-drawn coach breaks down in the middle of a wooded area rich with scents. The unusual smell of the flowers (rose, lily) mixed with the memory of fruit and the mysterious earth notes of patchouli and the sweat of the horses (musk) surrounds them and imbues all clothing and fabric with its seductive charms. Once in Versailles, Anna delivers her letter to the artist François Boucher, who succumbs instantly to the fragrant perfume of her clothing. Anna wisely tucks a square of fabric in the letter requesting his presence in Russia, and the rest is (real) history. A gorgeous, fully realized scent that could have indeed inspired enduring greatness. |
