On one of her trips to Paris, DelRae Roth found herself admiring a portrait of Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of Henri II, a woman of legendary charm and intelligence. Years later, in collaboration with perfumer Yann Vasnier (whom we love for his work for Divine and Comme des Garcons), a perfume inspired by this mythical courtesan was born. Centered on luxurious orris accord, Mythique is one of the most alluring renditions of iris that we have encountered. Beautifully ornamented with succulent top notes of citrus fruits and bright and sensual floral heart of peony and jasmine, the fragrance possesses the kind of luscious tenderness that is rarely found in rooty, earthy iris perfumes. It is said that Poitiers always dressed in black and white, and is if to echo the contrast, the soft, playful iris is juxtaposed in Mythique with the darker, sensual base notes of sandalwood, patchouli and ambrette, the base in which we definitely sense a touch of leather…a whip in the hand of the beautiful equestrian.
