In The Summer Kitchen
Water Perfume
by CB I Hate Perfume

The Scoop
In The Summer Kitchen is a scent very close to Christopher’s heart. His tiny country house was originally the summer kitchen on his family’s property, and no amount of remodeling could ever remove the scent that two centuries’ worth of cooking has imbued in the rafters. Fresh vegetables and herbs growing right outside the window scent the air, and it’s this feel that he infused In The Summer Kitchen with. It’s an extremely fresh and happy scent…very sweet, crisp orange and yellow vegetables rather than dark green or spicy, it’s clean and sunny rather than earthy. Light, refreshing and breezy, In The Summer Kitchen is super wearable and friendly, a lovely breeze of a scent that feels like the moment between morning and afternoon when the air is still cool and the sun is bright, beautiful and not quite scorching.

In The Summer Kitchen Notes
The scent of home: fresh garden vegetable and herbs on a clear summer evening with a touch of smoked old rafters.

Yuck! I can't believe how bad this smells to me! It's horrid! It's just like garbage that has rotting banana peel in it.

On my skin, In The Summer Kitchen starts out fresh with a strong herbal note. In the drydown I get a hefty dose of soil and a strong soupy vegetable note (like V8 but with less tomato). I find this better as a room fragrance than a perfume.

I really like it! I get the green sort of freshness described, but it's not super fresh. It's got a sweetness and a substantial, almost heavy smell. A nice balance of light, fresh yet interesting, solid, if that makes sense. In a very minor way, it reminds me of The Gap Grass, which had that same sweet, heavy, light, herbal, quality.

Hi Mitsouko! I have read plenty of your comments but am wondering if you've even tried them? I'd like to hear from people who have tried the juice and not those who criticize based on name/brand alone. Thanks!

Smells like an old musty summer camp. It's an interesting fragrance to smell out of the bottle. The kind you let others smell because it reminds you of something. It captures the idea but really does anyone want to smell like this?

All of the CB scents have a distant quality, like a memory or particularly vivid dream. They are different from the more literal (and more chemical) Demeter scents that are widely available, though they do remind me of the special stash of hand labeled scents that were available at the Demeter store in New York. What CB is doing here is very special. All of the scents wear like a mood and the writing explains the emotion and thought that went into each scent. I realize that there is a lot of hype behind the perfume industry but that is not what is happening here. I've tried the expensive perfumes at Barney's, the so called "hand blended" or "limited edition " scents in the minimalist bottles and with a few exceptions they survive on a diet of hype and perceived exclusivity. The CB scents on the other hand are small and personal, brilliant, and truly a work of art. On me this one is quite vegetal, green peppers and wood. Very lovely though I don't have the same personal connection with this one that I have with some of his others. Each of the CB scents evolves differently on everyone, so if you are intrigued I would suggest giving it a try.

I kind of like it actually. In the beginning, it smell kind of bitter or something, but it develops into something quit warm and sweet in a subtle way. Very close to the skin, very comforting. I wouldn't call it fresh and summery though.

Ok, I've read the descriptions of most of this brand's concoctions and I have only one thing to say to Christopher: You have GOT to be kidding me. And no, it's not that I lack "imagination" (I'd have to hallucinate to like this stuff), it's just that I think that paying to smell like smoke and kitchen sink is a bit, ah, odd. No offense meant to those who enjoy this, though.

There is a saltiness, maybe a sea breeze there....but what I smell is closer to cleaning liquid.
