L’eau Serge Lutens
Eau de Parfum
by Serge Lutens

The Scoop
Two decades after introducing the world to his baroque elixirs, Serge Lutens hasn’t lost the will – or the capacity – to shock. And what a shock L’Eau Serge Lutens will be to his fans. Touted as an “anti-perfume” for the days when you want to take a break from scent, this new eau, apparently the first of a series, breaks with Lutens’ oriental inspiration. “The real key is what I decided not to put in this scent”, he explains. So: no spices, no heady flowers, no fruity woods or animal notes. Just the smell of a “crisp, freshly-laundered white shirt”, of “the most expensive soap in the world”.

And indeed, the first, unmistakably aldehydic whiff of L’Eau Serge Lutens does conjure olfactory images of a hot iron on linen or an ivory-white soap bar… A fresh, citrusy green accord of magnolia and lily-of-the-valley with hints of transparent rose, barely tinged with the ambery-woody clary sage, hides a whiff of ozonic notes. Carried by a wave of white musk, the scent, despite its airiness, is remarkably long-lasting.

So if you’re going to do clean, you might as well do it Serge’s way. Simple, fresh, irrepressibly modern.

This is surprisingly lovely! I didn't like it on a strip but on my skin it's perfectly aldehydic drying down to something a little bit sweet and very clean. I find it very sexy and so does my bf. It definitely lingers on my skin but I can't speak to projection/sillage, samples make that hard.

I have to say, I was quite shocked when I smelled this. Most Serge Lutens fragrances illicit either love or hate with me, however, what shocked me here was how "meh" it is. It's not bad or good... to be totally honest, it smelled sort of like "Macy's Fragrance Counter Men's Fragrance" to me, just utterly banal.

This was my first experience of the line, and i have to say if this is just the essence of Serge Lutens, then i guess i better invest my time in the whole line of fragrances. It was wonderful, a nice muted well rounded clean fresh slightly aquatic scent. Could definitely sense the ozone factor. Is lovely.

If you like Escentric Molecules, and this kind of minimalistic and very contemporary scents, you will love this one. It is light, refreshing, suitable for all seasons.

On me, this is a clean citrus floral cologne, which is exactly what I happened to be looking for. It's warm, bright and does not induce a headache to my sensitive nose. It feels universal (unisex) as well which I really like. I would definitely add this to my fragrance wardrobe.

With Serge Lutens it is love or hate and rarely anything in between. I am a lover of clean fragrances so I was sure this one would be up my alley. What a disappointment! It's too sharp, too metallic and too artificial greenish smelling. A scrubber.

I have many, many perfumes but I've never had one that I spray on three times a day. This scent is uplifting, fresh, clean and unique. My favourite by far.

Seriously?! Yes, it is overpriced for something that smells so blah. I am a huge fan of some of Lutens' work and a proud owner of bottles of MKK, ISM, and Myrrhe. That being said, it doesn't mean that everything the guy puts is name to is good or valuable. This smells like a hundred other generic nondescript 'sport fresh' stuff that I wouldn't sniff twice in a Duty Free shop. It's not even that impressive a statement as an 'anti-perfume'. If that's what you want, go chat up CdG's Odeur 71. Now that's an anti-perfume with something to say!

You can pretty much smell all of the notes in here if you pay attention, including the soft magnolia, however the overall feeling is of a clean fresh soft citrus, very slight herbal feel, totally unisex. But a bit boring too. I have had no luck with any of SL's perfumes, and I bought this thinking that i might just love it as it's supposedly such a departure from his normal work, well it is, but I wouldn't buy this either. I just don't like his style.

If you want to spend your hard earned cash to smell like Eau d'Spray Starch then by all means, go for it!

This smells fresh and pretty pleasant at first, but its freshness is a chemical-y freshness, and I'm finding that I don't really like it after a while. It has a "fake lime" kind of tinge -- like something from Comme des Garcons. Not terrible, but not really awesome either.

This is a really fantastic scent! It is marketed as the anti-scent, and I think it serves well to this end. For when you want to smell good without all the pomp and circumstance. I think it's sad when people give negative feedback on a fragrance they have never smelled.

Finally got a chance to sample this and it was just "meh". Nothing original or groundbreaking. Just another clean laundry scent.

Obviously, people have strong opinions about this one, but something's only "not worth the price" if you're unwilling to pay it. To others who genuinely like and appreciate what L'eau offers, it's worth the price.

I'm going to jump into the fray and say that I find this fragrance completely innocuous. It's very faint on me, and it kind of reminds me of a bathroom--a combination of men's cologne and toothpaste. Why anyone would pay big bucks for this is beyond me.

Tis is a lovely fragrance, completely uncomplicated, easy to wear, great warmer weather fragrance. Wonderful for the office. Quiet wisps of fragrance around you. I love it. And realistically the price is actually decent too. you get 100 ml in this bottle, not just 50ml....so really for an SL its fair price. I bought a bottle as i find this fragrance beautiful and so easy to wear.

I got my sample yesterday and unfortunately find this one to be too loaded with metallic aldehyde. Smells like fresh air and nothing else - no soap, no crisp shirt, no hot iron on linen... Not an unpleasant scent, but not for me.

Great uncomplicated scent. It is pricey. No matter how you dice it, it does cost. I do not think anyone here is downing the product. It gets a little out of reach when things get this high for the average person. To experience a scent is everyone's right and I think the designers often put this second. I love the scent, though!

Loving the "5 Star Retaliation Police" who feel they must up the rating on an overpriced item. (To "undo" the negative feedback....too funny)

Interesting how some people feel the need to leave a 1 star review slamming the product even though they admittedly haven't even tried it.

I haven't tried Serge's latest, but give the guy a break. Five stars for having the balls to take a risk. Sometimes, when I have exhausted my craving for chypre, oriental, floral or smoky/leather perfumes, I want something that smells simply...clean. I love and adore many of Lutens' perfumes: Ambre Sultan, Borneo, Fumerie Turque, Gris Clair, Chene and others. Serge Lutens is the Picasso of perfume (who also changed his style throughout his painting history). He did something different. Open your mind.

Just the smell of a “crisp, freshly-laundered white shirt”, of “the most expensive soap in the world”. I hate this new affectation of stiffing people to the tune of $150 for an "anti-perfume" that "smells like soap." Shame on you, Serge Lutens! There's a very apt phrase that describes people who shell out $150 to smell like fabric softener, but we're in polite company, so I'll just say that a fool and his money are easily parted.

With clary sage and ozone, i'm sure this is another stinky scrubber. I wouldn't recommend spending a jaw-dropping $150 without smelling it first (and notice, they don't give you that option......). Zero stars for the inflated price.
