Private Collection: Bois de Copaiba
Eau de Parfum
by Parfumerie Generale

The Scoop
Opulent, decadent and warm, Bois de Copaiba defies the politically correct, characterless modern trends. This homage to the glamorous scents of the past is an enveloping, incredibly sophisticated creation. The top accord of candied oranges, spicy ginger and amaretto is creamy, indolent and exquisitely delicious. The balsamic warmth of copahu in the heart of Bois de Copaiba is dark and sensual and leads to the lavish base notes of sweet myrrh and creamy woods. Sinfully rich, piquant and intoxicating, Bois de Copaiba is a scent of luxurious indulgences and forbidden delights.

Ever tried Serge Lutens Chergui? This PG concoction is 99% like it, and that alone means I'm not feeling the love.

I was very unimpressed with this. I found the opening to be medicinal, and the drydown to remind me strongely of Red Hots candy. You know, the fabricated cinnamon smell. I dont detect any wood.

Based on the reviews, this one seems to react with different skin chemistries in very unpredictable ways. I was hoping for the crystalized orange rind and ginger mixed with resinous wood, but on me this unortunately takes on the "bathroom cabinet" quality another reviewer mentioned. A strong, singular, chemical stink. If you're curious about this scent, I would recommend trying a sample first.

Extremely compelling, beautiful cold weather scent. Reminiscent of L'Heure Bleue but without its sharp medicinal bombastic character and less cloyingly sweet. A lovely ambery carnation leather with a vintage-style powderyness, and the copaiba balsam is beautiful in it. I have a sample from Eden Botanicals to compare it to, and the bois is deeply blended into it. The end result is a dead ringer for Jean Patou's discontinued vintage classic Divine Folie, although cleaner and woodsier, without all that one's civet & musk. A stunning perfume and a triumph, although it will definitely not appeal to noses who prefer modern scents. This one's oddly enough a modern vintage, if such a thing existed. Someone on Basenotes called it anachronistic - it really is. There is a gorgeous effect here of carnation/iris that is worth experiencing. Really, so similar to Divine Folie it stunned me.

It may be that summer is not the time to try this fragrance. I want to love it -- and I can love it, from a distance right now -- because it smells (and I am not the first reviewer to point this out) like the inside of a fantastic wooden box that held spices. The scent isn't a dry sort of spicy though -- and maybe that's the problem for warm weather -- it reaches out and enfolds me in what will probably feel like a comforting embrace in october and right now feels like a cloying stranglehold. I give it five stars because I really feel like the problems with it are problems with my fair skin, or my too-hot environment, and that this scent on its own merits is marvelous.

This is one of my favorite PGs. It is hard to pick out separate notes, as the fragrance is blended so smoothly. However, if I had to try, I would say that it is soft aromatic amber-y woods with bright side of orange and amaretto. Amazing in cold weather, but also love it in hot weather -applied very very carefully.

Beautiful, deep, amber-y goodness. It softly "glows" on my skin with amber, dried woods, a bit of amaretto, ginger and orange. Very warming, very soft. It is perfect in cold weather. I am surprised at negative reviews - skin chemistry makes all the difference, I guess.

My least favorite of PG fragrances - smells like a car air freshener.

This is intoxicating... and naggingly familiar. Something about reminds me of someplace I've been before, but I can't put my finger on it. Still, this fragrance is gently spicy and sweet, with gorgeous woody notes to keep it grounded.

The opening is wonderful--Orange like you've never smelled it before. At drydown, it is very reminiscent of L'Heure Bleu, but with something else. It's not for me, but it is a compelling fragrance of great charm.
