Eau de Polder
Extrait de Parfum
by L’essence de Mastenbroek

The Scoop
'The fragrance not only calls forth associations you can immediately name, like the scents of hay, milk and cattle; it also tries to evoke an idea of space— a faraway horizon— and the sensation of a cold wind.' - Birthe Leemeijer

Designed to evoke a specific place— a polder in the Netherlands— this unusual scent blends hay, herbs and fresh-cut grass. We personally have never been to a polder in the Netherlands, so we can’t vouch for how accurately it captures one, but it makes us go a bit dreamy eyed remembering childhood visits to an aunt’s farm in the Midwest. This does indeed smell like the countryside. Clean and pristine countryside, in springtime, with cows a couple of pastures over and an emerald carpet of new grass under your feet. While there are no floral notes listed, we still get a sweet undercurrent that reminds us of wildflowers blooming in a meadow. There is a gentle creaminess and a soft earthy warmth under the nostalgic scent of freshly mown hay. You absolutely do not need to be from the Netherlands to feel the magic of this— it smells like another time, before industry and sprawling development. It smells like open spaces and uncluttered agendas. Genuine and utterly unique.
Eau de Polder Notes

I am delighted that someone has actually succeeded in bottling the smell of cut grass and wildflowers. I have been looking a long time for a perfume that could capture those delicate whiffs of summertime bike rides. Really this perfume is polderesque and playful. After the initial bliss though, I smelt not a polder landscape with yellow ducks any more - what was left were just yellow flowers like freesia or narcissus. And while this flowery scent is still very Dutch (it reminded me a lot of my grandmothers home) I think it is not how I, woman of the 21st century, want to come across.

First I got a sample - then I ordered the full bottle without hesitating. This is what I was seeking for - my true Hay Perfume ! I waded through lots of yucky samples which all claimed to smell like Hay, to have Hay included or what else. Some really nasty stuff was there - but now I am rewarded. Still waiting for my treasure to arrive - and for German customs to speak their judgement and collect the fee... sigh. But it is worth every cent. The best, truest and long-lasting HAY of the world. I am happy !

I tried for so long to get a sample of this that I was almost tempted to buy the FB unsniffed. So glad I didn't. I don't know why I was so obsessed with trying this, I guess I love hay and wildflower sort of scents, as opposed to big lush overpowering florals, but I should have given pause when I read the dirt/earth note, but no, I was still curious. Anyway this smells like earth, not like a huge pile of dirt but like going outside after it's been raining, and digging up a bit of the dirt/earth near a herb garden and there's like a clean-ish dirt smell. The hay and herbs are there but you really have to strain to identify them, in fact the whole scent is really so subtle that I am straining to actually smell it, so I don't know if it is worth the money for the fact that it has practically no sillage whatsoever. It is an oil, so It may last a while but you have to press nose to wrist to smell it. I could hardly smell any wildflowers, except so softly about half an hour in :(

Well. so many positive reviews, I´m wondering if I got a wrong sample. It´s just big no with my skin chemistry, my family commented what a dreadful smell I´m wearing. Just too much grass and something like old cammomile teabag. Shame.

This is exactly what I wanted Bois Blond to smell like, though I found BB to develop a somewhat abrasive "spicy" note after a while. Polder, however, stays smooth and lovely. In truth, its ultra-realism reminds me a bit of one of the green "I Hate Perfume" accords -- also nice and smooth on my skin. I give this a 3 due to the combo of 1) the exorbitant price and 2) the fact that it sweetens up a bit too much over time ... doesn't manage to retain its unique and lovely hay note. If either of these two factors could be overcome, I would buy this in a heartbeat because, on initial application, it is absolutely heavenly.

For as long as I've remembered, my mother has grown chamomile to dry for tea. "Eau de Polder" is the sweet, grassy scent of dried chamomile flowers and stems as crumbling between fingers--that appley-sweet, hay-dry scent of well-sunned flowers and grasses. It's charming, enchanting. Even more, the story of a population striving to preserve the olfactive "essence" of place is fascinating.

I'd wear this in Spring but don't feel it is a good year round scent for me. I lived in Delft(South Holland) for awhile. This scent is just like that of the polder between Delft and Rotterdam so it brings back found memories

This really did end up smelling like a hay field on a warm summer day. I liked that a lot. Unfortunately at first it smelled like a combination of cucumber and bubble gum - which I did not like at all.

Authentically evokes fresh-cut clover or alfalfa drying in the fields, after the machinery crushes and cuts the stems, adding a green, woody fragrance to the sweetness of the blossoms themselves. This sort of aroma is especially strong at night when the dew falls. One comment on the host's description: hay actually smells this sweet alone; no wildflowers are necessary. I only wish it lasted longer than two hours on me.

I'm wondering if I got the wrong sample because mine smells like a thick creamy petaled gardenia dipped in butter flavoring. Very different from the description and not my preferance.

I liked the top notes, because I love the smell of the woods, which this did smell like at first. The dry down just smelled like a perfume that I just didn't like. IMHO Donna Karan Gold smells much better.

Broken week stems. This reminds me of going off the path during a hike in the woods in late summer, and getting frantic because you can't find the path again. All you smell are broken tall weed stems underfoot and all around you. Similar to a very rich version of Demeters "Poison". My 7 year old just said, "ewwww - smells like camping". I don't think I'd say ewwwww, but she is right - very herby and weedy.

I concur...creamy, earthiness. I was lucky enough to smell this before Franco actually started carrying it in the store and I was smitten. It 's unlike any fragrance I have smelled and I have smelled hundreds if not thousands. The melding of green, cream and earth is incredible. A true comfort scent.

It has a sweet, comforting milky/earthy smell. I really like it, it is soothing, soft and different. The dry down is a little sweeter than I hoped for, but this is nice and easy to wear.

This has an oily, cheap, sweet and coconutty smell. I would not have even minded the smell of cows or dirt. Why do most bad smelling things just cling and cling? If someone blindfolded me and put this under my nose I would peg it to be a WalMart bath oil.

Where i can purchase these refill, only in Hollanad? It is a great idea to buy refill for less amount of $...However,i do think this parfum worth the amount of money. It's just doesn't stay on me to long.

The storyline is certainly original and appealing probably more so than the fragrance. Seems to have a fougere background akin to Villoresi's Yerbamate, but lighter and fresher with typical notes of watery green aromachemicals such as algenone (synarome), helional, etc. I could fly to Holland and pick up a free refill for less than a quarter of the luckyscent price, though it would be quicker to make some myself

OK, this does smell like hay to me...I have horses and have hay fields all around me. Love this scent because even thou I have allergies...I LOVE the smell of fresh cut hay. This is a soft scent very summer worthy, the dry down is sweet and very feminine. I am going to purchase a big bottle. Oh Yeah it does last too!

I found this to be one of the most intriguing scents. If I were to describe it would be like a field of sweet peas and hay, with a slight smell of amber and smoke. Chemistry is everything, so if Lola is to bland and Leau Dissey to recognizable then this is their love child you were born to adopt.

Well, my husband works in Holland but didn't this smelled much like a Dutch field, though he agreed it was "earthy" smelly. On me, it kinda smelled like coconuts or something weirdly sweet, can't put my finger on it (must be the polder!!). A gentle scent, not overpowering or spicy at all, but not for me.

OK I haven't smelled this, but I just came back from my Mother's farm in Maine. Not sure that cows, manure, hay, dirt, grain, humidity are things I want to be wearing. But hey the bottle reminds me of chemistry class and a sample can't be too bad.
