Rose Poivree
Eau de toilette
by The Different Company

The Scoop
It takes over one hundred pounds of precious Damascus rose petals to produce just one bottle of Rose Poivrée. A royal scent from exotic lands, this decadent essence mixes pure rose with a devilish pepper and spice, a combination fit for kings, queens and all who seek the divine (with a touch of naughty) in fragrance. The true beauty of Rose Poivrée is its amazing turns—from the tangle of dark, luscious rose petals to the fiery spice-meets-green evolution, it never fails to captivate and enchant. A rare, costly and beautiful gem for the wild sensualists among you.

I again read the ingredients as well as the reviews and I found myself intrigued so I bought the sample & now I am slowly becoming an addict to this potent potion. This is not your grandmothers rose nor is it your sweet lovely floral rose but this is your true, hard hitting rose. This rose hits you & abuses your senses making you feel dirty in a very good way! It must be the civet that gives it that temper I crave. On my skin chemistry the rose last a very long time & lingers on. I may have to buy a whole bottle at this point because I want my rose scent search to be over & the addiction to be filled by this exotic fluid.....

The rose smell here is pure and prominent and avoids the combination with geranium or berries so many other "rose" scents include. I like the rose here very much. BUT . . . Something else in the mix causes a hard right turn and gives it a rigid backbone to the roses. Probably its the pepper, bay or civet or a combination, I guess. This is not a romantic roses scent but a hard living, wake up call kind of rose fragrance. For this type of striking rose blend I really prefer Voleur d' Roses or Paestum Rose. But, no question the rose smell is quite nice and intriguing. A very unique fragrance.

This is certainly a different rose perfume---lots of pepper and spice at the beginning. Then the civet (new for me and it's strangely appealing) and then some rose--but the rose is not a sweet, innocent rose. This is a rose that has some serious confidence and power behind it!

Wonderful rose and pepper opening. With the dry down comes the civet discussed in a previous post. Very different.

Phew! I was looking for a rose scent that packed a punch - and this delivers. For me, this was a lesson in civet - the strong, animalic scent that is just too rude for me! Worth sampling though - my boyfriend didn't detect any "cat's bum"! See what you think.

I went shopping (brick-and-mortar) for a chypre, but when I found this I couldn’t resist. Rose is one of the few florals I can abide wearing, and this one is huge fun. On me it’s very consistent from application to dry-down, a virtual trio of rose, vetiver, and orris with the other spices humming a faintly naughty harmony. The salesman who sniffed my elbow after I’d worn it for an hour or so compared it to curry and roses—maybe the faint cumin-like civet note was stronger in his nose than mine. I just love it and wear it more than anything else on my perfume tray, day and night. I believe it would make a great men’s scent, too, especially because the dry, chilly roots offset the sweetness of the rose. It’s a little like sticking your nose into the loam of a heritage rose garden (Bourbons and damasks, not teas) a few days after the tom-cat has been through.

Beautiful. A warm, unusually spiced rose with a musky lingering drydown. Feminine, but with far more depth, complexity and dimension than most rose fragances. I have scent-eating skin, so I was pleasantly surprised by the decent longevity of this edt formulation. Rose Poivree is one of those rare fragrances that would be appropriate for nearly any occasion, be it church, work, shopping, or a romantic dinner. This also wears surprisingly well on a wide age range of women; so lovely not only on myself, but on my mother and my teen daughter as well. It seemed to amplify a different facet of itself on each of us. A classic, beautifully wearable perfume which I will never be without.

I read about Rose Poivree in the Times Sunday Magazine. The article made my mouth water for this scent and it has not disapointed me in the least. Intoxicating...

When I smelled this in the bottle and on a test strip, I was over the moon--it's gorgeous! True rose, but the bite of pepper...I couldn't wait to put it on! However, something in my body chemistry hates this scent, because it smells horrific on me--like stale sweat socks. I tried twice, and both times it went from "Ah!" to "Ewwww!" in five minutes, and stayed there. My advice--try a sample, because it truly is a lovely scent. Just not on me.

This rose fragrance is amazing. Real roses, deep and dark, and fabulous peppery spices. There is nothing simple about this one. Very, very sensual.

Never dreamed of even trying this scent until I received a sample as part of a purchase. The drydown is so masculine and the civet seems to mold with my chemistry to form a scent that is, well....intoxicating...I am told. In my top five immediately due to it's uniqueness and the compliments I get wearing it.

So cumin-y, just an initial hint of rose, there and GONE. Leaving nothing but acrid cumin behind. Sounds like it ought to really smell great tho, a very imaginative mix.

I was disappointed with this -- not rosy enough, but not bad smelling. It reminded me of peppery rose at first-- then smelled like insense in church. The dry down was a very strong herbal scent --the corriander comes thru. I think it will smell great on my husband. I do agree It is masculine.

This smells exactly like roses, period end of story. I do not detect any other notes and I certainly do not think this smells masculine as others have previously posted. It did not last very long on me but overall it is a pleasant fragrance.

Another winner from TDC for me! Nothing at all like the icky sweet rose oil stuff from the head shop. This one has some real GUTS to it. Not a dead rose petal smell either, like Lutens' Rose de Nuit, but long-lasting, slightly peppery, and a bit animalistic. A rose fragrance for men, in my opinion.

Well I was hoping to like this one, but I was disappointed. It smells like rose but not the usual rose smell, it's a little spicy when it dries down.

I absolutely love this one! It's the antithesis of most rose perfumes--nothing even remotely grandma-esque about it. In fact, it's actually quite masculine without being overbearing--my fiance wears it more often than I do!
