Calamus
Eau de Toilette
by Comme des Garcons Series 1: Leaves

The Scoop
Calamus is the crown jewel of all green scents. It’s the fragrance of living plants, of freshly crushed stems and crumpled leaves. It’s the scent of a trampled meadow after a wild night of bacchanalia by unruly faeries and wood sprites. The scent of your fingers after you’ve been picking stems and the verdant juice clings to your skin. There are no sharp pine or tree notes here; Calamus is gentle and almost milky, a jumble of young leaves still sweet in their unfurled glory. For those who seek greener pastures, look no more. This is your holy grail.
Calamus Notes
young bamboo leaf, celery grains, angelica root, rose berries

Previous reviewers who described this as crushed leaves and stems were right. Imagine the small while ball of sap that gathers at the end of a broken stem. Very clean, light, fresh. Drys down to a vanilla sweetness. Alas, doesn't last long. But the initial vegetal aromas are very pleasant.

My favorit ever. First juicy bamboo, after milk at clean baby skin. Green, very inspirative and fresh. Very best among all green!

No..its not the fresh GREEN scent I was anticipating, instead a blast of VERY strong, sweet artificial aroma in a bottle,it actually smells just like the peppermint fragrance from this perfumer. sorry, thumbs down.

I consider Calamus the scent that started my current love affair with perfumes. It is soft, sweet and vegetal, completely feminine and organic. At the same time, it is completely unique and sensual. Calamus is for the woman who wants to feel feminine without having to resort to being "just pretty." If it is truly being discontinued, I will be making a very large order, as I do not ever want to live without it.

Pretty and green. Almost lily-like in the dry down on me, but fades so quickly! *Maybe* lasted an hour. Disappointed.

I didn't really understand what Calamus was, and therefore expected this to smell like lemon balm. It's not at all the fresh green citrus scent I was expecting - rather, I agree that it has a milky hand lotion scent, green leaves and a touch of smoke. Actually it reminded me of milk weeds and green tomato horn worms in my parent's back yard. I adore other CDG scents (Avignon, CGD 1,2,3, Rhubarb, Guerilla 2) but this one lacked the icy coolness that I love so much in the others.

smells like an open air farmers market in a european city to me: all the fresh veggies, you know? (yes, i definitely get the celery in this.) nice, though.

I really like this - it's such a pretty, soft, creamy, green scent. It dries down to almost a vanilla sweetness, but much lighter and greener. It evokes a gorgeous spa in Thailand or some SE Asian island. A peaceful, beautiful scent.

This scent smells like my old treehouse...without the wet carpet. Makes me want to have a smoke and read Playboy.

I was expecting this to smell energetic and very green like Calyx by Perscriptives- but that isn't the case It has a rather calming effect , similar to walking into a green house. Calamus isn't overly flowery either-It takes the subtle scent of flowers that aren't particularly fragrant and amplifies it with a beautiful nectar straight from Demeter's Garden. Also, for those who are curious about the leaves series, the others are: Lily, Mint, Tea and Shiso.

Just like the review says! The smell instantly brought me back to my childhood playing in yard and ripping up leaves. It's a pity the leafy green scent left quickly on me. The remaining drydown smelled very much like grass mixed with some sort of generic drug-store hand lotion. In fact if this was a lotion I think it would be great. I ended up buying it anyway. It's a pity it's discontinued. (If you can, you must try and get your hands on "Shiso" from this series as well!)

Very long lasting fragrance. First milky, sweet, green. After 10 minutes it smells like tea leaves and dry nicotine leaves with some smokey, sweet twist. Wonderful!

At first it was a green grass scent but as soon as it dried it morphed and lost all of its freshness. Instead, there's a faint musty, murky, sweet scent clinging to my skin. I'm afraid it almost smells like puke, something rancid like that. I guess it's a good thing I don't like it since it's discontinued.

This is very calmning and fresh. It smells a little like a cardboard box, but thats not a bad thing, this is probably the bamboo. I like it.

I agree with Malin from CA, but to me the key scent after the drydown was PRUNES, not figs-- weird...

beautiful milky green sap. the best truly "green" smell, but I could never buy a bottle of it. It fades instantly to zilch!

It's the sap of green wood and the milk of broken dandelion stems. It's the smell of those green gras$ stains that were always dappled on your jeans as a kid. It will take you back to a time when the borders between indoors and outdoors were more permeable, when you played with utter abandon and watched the ground for crickets and ant lions. It's the spirit of youth and the spirit of creation...more potent than wild...you'll feel like a 10-year-old with a very old soul.

The first CDG perfume that I ever got, from the store in Paris; still one of my favorites for certain moods--it is absolutely mellow--who could resist baby bamboo?

The description makes it sound wild, it's not it's soft and mellow. I don't know much about the calmus leaf, I smell a more soft milky sweet fig. II'm tempted to say it's floral. It's a lovely soft non-vetiver, non-piney green, non-citrus green scent. It's long lasting and easy to wear.
