Traversee du Bosphore
Eau de Parfum
by L’Artisan Parfumeur

The Scoop
In which Bertrand Duchaufour takes the Orient-Express to bring back a scented postcard from Istanbul to add another chapter to L’Artisan Parfumeur’s travel series… Traversée du Bosphore (“Crossing the Bosphorus”) is, like its namesake strait, the link between the West and the East, or rather, between cutting-edge French perfumery and its ancient Oriental roots. To conjure the smells of the city, Bertrand Duchaufour has deftly matched two icons of Istanbul, the famed Anatolian leather and the Turkish delight, into a unique interpretation of the leather genre. The leather accord itself is soft suede rather than rawhide: it rides out in the top notes in a huge gust of dry, powdery iris (real orris absolute was used in the blend), boosted by saffron which, like iris, has leathery facets. The tart and juicy apple and pomegranate accords act both as souvenirs from Istanbul – the former a quote of the apple-scented tobacco smoked in hookahs, the latter of the pomegranate juice sold in markets – and as bridges between the raspiness of the leather and the delectable rose and pistachio Turkish delight accord. Which is startlingly vivid, from the melting, jammy chewiness of the sweet to the dusting of caster sugar.

With its balance between the dryness of the leather-iris-saffron and the sweetness of the Turkish delight, Traversée du Bosphore will delight men and women alike. Go ahead. Take a bite...

Really soft. Lovely lush sent. For me, the scent seems not so much leather, but woodsy and a touch of vanilla. I like it, but as a man - this one is only for certain days.

Very feminine and powdery.

Reminds me of a sophisticated version of Ana Sui - dreams. More complex, less synthetic

Stunning. My favorite L'Artisan, bar none. I get mostly iris, a soft suede, and pistachio lokum. Lasts for most of the day. Charming and unique.

Sadly, no. It sounded sooo good! The notes! And when I tried it on in the store, the suede really came through and amped this powdery, candy confection up into something ...Different! But now...I don't know if its the bottle I got or what, but its giving me a headache, even sprayed lightly. :( There's something very artificial smelling and chemically in it. It could be the attempt to synthesize suede using unnatural ingredients, I'm not sure. Its really sad, because when its working, it smells like a sweet pomegranate apple body wash you can get at the drugstore, and when its not working ....bug spray. I'm so bummed.

I find this extremely feminine. At first I wasn't sure, the leather took a strangwe note on my skin which I did not identify as leather. This drys down to a powdery sweet candy smell, like a marshmallow. I didn't smell enough rose or pistachio for it to be called tukish delight, but maybe its just my skin. Still bought a bottle :)

Oh my. I usually love the L'ARTISANS... I adore TIMBUKTU, have emptied two bottles of DZING!, admire MECHANT LOUP, even have a grudging respect for BOIS FARINE. But TRAVERSEE DU BOSPHORE is just.... loathsome. (And you'll *never* hear me use that word in a perfume review.) Often a "difficult" perfume can magically win me over over time (like Miglin PHER'OMONE) but this one could never do that, I'm afraid. I get a kind of green banana thing in the head married to a (faux) water note, followed by assertive, cloying exotic flowers like a stale GLADE spray; then I get that heart of iris (perhaps my least favorite note in all of perfumery). To my "caveman" brain, iris smells like...exactly what it is: a deadly botanical poison that could kill children and pets. Then, when I'm reeling from all these motley oddities, in comes an accord of what appears to be powdered candy violets and cacao? Some hint of woody spice creeping out from that mess? Oh my lord. What a farrago of ill-blending shipmates. This is one voyage to Turkey that has me hanging over the side of the boat.

This is SUCH an interesting, complex fragrance. I smell three very distinct parts to this perfume. The opening is sweet and fun, there is a lot going on- I get the Turkish delights, like an almond smell. Then the heart is pretty floral, and although it is my least favorite part, it is still quite nice. The end is where it's at- a definate powdered sugar smell that I just can't stop smelling. The perfume is a bit magical (like elves made this or something???)- it is so non-linear- definately worth a sample and maybe worth the whole darn bottle. Pretty special stuff.

Wow, I did not expect to like this. TdB lived up to the description on my skin, I guess I hit the body chemistry jack pot! A conservative application lasted a good 24hrs and I got several wearings out of the sample vile. I'm glad LS sent me a sample, otherwise I probably wouldn't have tried it. I'm not a fan of sweet scents and this is definitely sweet but not sickly so, I wouldn't wear it on a hot day though. The reviewer who mentioned those who like Dzongkha will like this, is dead on, even though I wouldn't have thought so, but I am, in fact, a big fan of Dzongkha! Maybe Duchaufour scents just work for me. I'm not sure if I'll order a bottle or not but I am glad I tried it. I definitely think it's sample worthy even if you don't think you'll like it.

This was a lovely sweet leather iris scent on me.. drydown moves into a slightly caramelly smell that is very pleasant and soothing. If you like Dzongkha this one is definitely worth a try.

Not sure I can get all the notes in the description, but it is a delicious fragrance nonetheless, and on me is most reminiscent of a sweet and spicy liqueur. Definitely can taste the pomegranate at the very top, and the soft leathery feel of iris and saffron (not at all cold, like someone else commented, but then again everyone's chemistry is different). The sweetness of it must be the Turkish Delight accord, although, not quite so sweet, more like sugared rose petals. The vanilla is more like vanilla extract than the actual spice. Problem is, like yet another L'Artisan creation, it has no lasting power, at least not on my skin. Very, very lovely and tasty though, impressionistically - smells a little like mulled wine, and candy, and the holidays. More feminine than unisex to my nose. I am tempted, because I like it on me a lot, but not quite sure it's worth the investment yet...

I'm so disappointed! I was so looking forward to this. I thought "if there was ever a perfume to buy unsniffed this is it for me!" but boy was I wrong. I was expecting this delicious mix of leather and edible turkish delight. When you smell every niche fragrance out there, you are just looking to be blown away. Alas...it didnt happen. It starts off as nothing but cold Iris on me (which to be fair I hate Iris for the most part) but even when it warms up a bit its just so....well, boring! There's no other word for it. Just ho hum warmish fragrance. Nothing especially identifiable and NOTHING that says Turkish delight to me. I do love L'Artisan in general though...this was just a big miss for me. Probably because I was SOOOO excited for it.

I love the opening, and drydown, but that mega ton, cheap, floral, heart makes it a scrubber for me.

apple in the opening. Really quiet perfume. Almonds, powder and rose in the drydown. I dont get any leather or tobacco notes. Super pretty and On my wish list.

I really love this scent, and the husband does too. There are many wonderful fragrances in my collection, but over the past three weeks, I've been having a hard time NOT wearing TdB. I doubt that I'll ever have a true *signature* scent, but this is top five for sure, and possibly top three (up there with vintage Shalimar extrait). Really good stuff. BD has done it again!
