Idole
Eau de Toilette
by Lubin

The Scoop
Inspired by the ancient maritime spice routes, from Madagascar and Zanzibar in East Africa to Java in the Spice Islands of Indonesia, Idole is a completely modern reinterpretation of a 1962 fragrance by the house of Lubin. Rum and exotic spices mingle with dark, smoky woods and leather, creating a warm and very seductive fragrance that never overwhelms, thanks to the light touch that is the hallmark of its creator, the celebrated perfumer Olivia Giacobetti. The stunning bottle by Serge Mansau was inspired by the sail of the traditional wooden boat known as a felucca, and features a carved African mask on the cap -- a true collector's item.

'Set the jungle on fire with a woody liqueur rich in scorching spices, as sweet as sugar cane, and as warm as leather.' - Olivia Giacobetti
Idole Notes
Rum absolute, saffron, bitter orange peel, black cumin, Doum palm, smoked ebony, sugar cane, leather, red sandalwood

Some of the women I know like to smell my neck when I wear this, so I bought a bottle. Great date scent! No regrets!

The bottle design is 5 stars, no doubt. I sampled this a while ago. I recently decided to make a purchase(based on memory). I remember loving this stuff but I guess my nose have matured since then. This stuff smells exactly how the bottle looks..exotic. The juice is ok. If anything, it's great decoration for your cologne collection.

where's the EDP version??? I tried it the other day, a must have, plus the new bottle is gorgeous.

Very mysterious, brooding, warm, sensuous and spicy. The cool down on me smells fainltly like a soft soapy scent. The only drawback is it dissipates quickly. Love it!

One of my favorite scents of all time, especially in the winter time. Boozy, warm and comforting spice... without any of the headache inducing spices and pepper smells that typically turn my stomach. If I had to give a complaint, it would be on the longevity. An EDP version would be amazing.... they need to create one of those.

I wanted to love this, and it smelled really nice in the vial, but on my skin it just smelled like cardamom, and it got more pungent/less creamy with time. I do love cardamom... but I want something a little more complex in a fragrance, and also anything too gourmand makes me uncomfortable anyway. I need to try it on my husband and see if it's better on a man...

Rich, incense-y, and very, very mysterious. An androgynous distinctive and distinguished scent. A very magical potion that can cast a love spell.. perhaps .. Much the way the Creoles liked to do in the French Quarter of New Orleans..... reminds me of Bourbon French Parfums VOODOO LOVE... a deep, earthy fragrance. A re-creation of the special potion Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau gave to her favored clients so they could gain the object of their affections. Rum and exotic spices mingle with dark, smoky woods and leather... you can almost hear the drums beating off in the distance...in Congo Square in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana, just north of the French Quarter. Voodoo warning Is calling Down in Limbo Moonlight lush life Bears strange fruit Down in Limbo Creole tattoo

This one did not work out for me.. the drydown is very nice but the rum/citrus - just not for me
Rating:
dpmason  -web design from New Haven

I am only judging from a sample, but the rum mixes very nicely with the saffron which I smell in spades, but in a good way. As I put it on, I realized it reminded me of the notes in Penhaglions Elixir (one of my favorites) but I didn't realize till I checked that the same perfumer was behind both! I love the rum overtone, but on the drydown, many of the other spices and flavors come across too. I may have to get a bottle of this! Very nice and sophisticated mix of notes.

Yum...but dries down a little too sweet on my husband.

First impression—smells like someone spilled a mai tai. Lots of rum and citrus. Gradually dries down to a spicy close-to-the-skin scent, very quiet, less sweet than at the beginning, and just a bit woodsy but not too masculine. Very long lasting. Softer but still lovely after several hours.

Smelled like something obnoxious from the 80's on me. Reading about it, I thought it had potential but it just didn't work on me.

Like some of the others, this is a wonderful scent. Wears very well. 5 star scent, 3 stars on longevity.

This is one of my favorites from the first sample I got from Lubin. It shares some of the spicy incense notes of Jubilation XXV and a distant rum correlation to Straight to Heaven. Those three have quickly become my favorite new genre. Idole is probably my favorite Olivia Giacobetti creation.. I truly hope she does more for this revival house. The price on this can't be beat... it's worth far more. Grab one now as the price is already starting to inch up! The bottle is incredible too... the photo here hardly does it justice. Great work from Lubin!

woody, delicious and sexy, wears well even in summer, though the sample I put on dissipated in a few hours.

This fragrance is hot, risky, dangerous and bold. Yet it is also romantic, teasing and something like caramels and honey. Fantastic! Idole de Lubin and I have a date this evening doing whatever I please.

Really love this spice & rum fragrance but wish it had some staying power. 5 stars for the fragrance, but 3 overall for poor longevity.

It smells like an old man !!!!
Rating:
Andy  - from L.A.

This is warm and seductive on my husband, dry, spicy and a little sweet. It is noticeable and has presence, but is not at all overpowering, even though he is prone to over-application. The drydown is all warm leather and sandal, with a lingering memory of the spice. I'm sad to say that Idole comes across as just too masculine to work with my own chemistry. Thus I am drawn to bury my face in Hubby's chest to breathe it in, which is the next best thing to wearing it myself (and he likes that part, too!). A definite bottle purchase for him.
Rating:
Lynda  -Nurse from St Louis

I had great hopes for this scent, but it's just too masculine on me, thanks to my body's tendency to amp leather and citrus. It doesn't smell bad, but on me it smells like leather and citrus, with an undertone of dry, spicy cumin and saffron. I think this scent would be white-hot on men and on women who can successfully wear leather.

i was severly dissappointed by this, it sounded spicy and warm and sexy and the bottle is beautiful. but, alas, on me it smelt like an old woman. musty, like rotting wood and imperial lather soap

Heavy on the rum and orange peel for about an hour, then it dried down to a wonderful sweet, warm, spicy sandalwood. Like most spicy scents, this would work well on both men and women.

Idole starts out with a well rounded opening. The rum and bitter orange a c;ear top notes, followed quickly by cumin, saffron, and sugar. But all fades rapidly to a sandalwood and leather drydown. Perhaps a better fixative could have been used to make this delicous opening last.

Intially I was reminded of Frapin "1270", and even thought I had found the answer to my spice-y cravings (something like Nanadebary Pink, but headier and with real substance to it). Lubin Idole doesn't want to stay with me >>sniff<<, but that's okay, as I have quite a dear friend in "1270"! Nice, but doesn't live up to the build up, or the bottle! 3 stars...

I was anxious about this when it just came out with all the hype, but was very disappointed it reminded me of some other scent I have smelled before, just redone, fancy bottle but that does not make the juice!
Rating:

Mmm, warm, sweet, spicy, exotic, woody, boozy, dark. I really love the rum and saffron notes. It's a bit like a stronger, better, spicier version of Liquid Karl, the perfume Karl Lagerfelt made for H&M. The "warm bread" note in that one is evocative of the warm, cosy sweetness of Idole. The only problem is, each time I put my nose to my wrist to smell it I get a vague hint of vomit, it's that sweet and musty. When I continue smelling it it goes away and I only feel the lovely spices and woods and rum but it is a bit offputting...

This is lovely, and (as another reviewer commented) similar to Donna Karan's discontinued Chaos -- which as I recall had a little more leather and less spice. (Maybe a cross between Chaos and Tea for Two?) It is warm, smoky and mysterious, yet has a kind of transparency and not at all heavy or aggressive, as I'd feared. I've been wearing it for about an hour, so I can't comment yet on its staying power. But so far, it has won me over.

Included as a sample with a regular purchase, I'd never smelled Idole before. Once I did, however, I loved it, and bought a bottle. (F.Y.I.: my fragrance preferences are for the richly-sweet, exotic and/or flowery.) It's a very heady, spicy scent; I detected almost a lilac or hyacinth note underneath the liquorish notes. It's a sexy and mature fragrance. My husband loves it, and I've received many compliments. The only drawback is that -- at least with my body's chemistry -- Idole's staying power is a bit weak. Overall, however, a great fragrance.

I purchased the sample to see if I like the perfume, since I love the bottle! As first, I smelled deep earth and woods, and humid forest. As it dried down, I smelled the rum and clove and really liked it. But it wore off more quickly than I had hoped. I may splurge on the bottle and enjoy the perfume as a bonus.

I really dislike this fragrance! Maybe it's the rum and cumin, but I scrubbed it off, fast!

My first impression was that it smells like Captain Morgan Tattoo Spiced Rum....with Coke, of course. The drydown is a different story. I happen to love it. It lasts a long time on my skin. Very warm and woody.

If you liked Donna Karan's now discontinued perfume CHAOS then you will like this. They smell very much alike. Kind of disappointing admist all the hype.

I tried this one because I respect Olivia Giacobetti's intentions but I tell you, I am pretty much over this fragrance genre altogether. Idole really lacks enough heat and mystery to really be called "intoxicating" or "seductive" in my book. This scent carries absolutely no surprises, no secrets.

I agree; I do smell a bit like a Chinese herbalist's shop, very Tiger Balm-y. I feel as if I've been smacked with an old Bay Rum-soaked sock after having lit a clove cigarette. Unless you want anyone near you to continually ask, "do you smell something burning?" Don't do it.

Very warm and spicy interesting fragrance. It smells like sweet fire! Not my usual type of fragrance, but very nice, strong in a good way, longlasting.

Perhaps it's just my skin chemistry but for the first hour it just smells like a Chinese herbal medicine shop. Very warm and spicy. The drydown is lovely, like you’re standing in a sugar cane field, bathed by a gentle afternoon sunshine.

this perfume is rich, incense-y, and very, very mysterious. a distinctive and distinguished smell. not how I want to smell but interesting nonetheless, I picture it on an mature, artistic, glamourously bohemian woman. strangely, despite the potency of the fragrance, by three hours after application it had dissapeared without a trace

A very woody, mildly sweet, androgynous scent that would smell equally gorgeous on men and women. Reminds me a bit of Givenchy Organza Indecence without all that ghastly vanilla. Leave it to Giacobetti, with her talent for composing scents that are at once deep and fresh, to produce a spice-heavy scent with clarity. For the cumin-wary, black cumin is nigella sativa, not the cumin you're accustomed to in Indian and Mexican food.
