Seville a l’Aube
Eau de Parfum
by L’Artisan Parfumeur

The Scoop
A perfumer, a writer. A man, a woman. A perfume, a story: Séville ŕ l’Aube. From an encounter comes this incredible soliflore fragrance, a sublime orange blossom, alive with contrasts.

The writer behind the story that inspired Séville ŕ l'aube is Denyse Beaulieu, the author of the noted fragrance blog Grain de Musc. Her creative collaboration with Bertrand Duchaufour is the narrative thread of her book The Perfume Lover, a Personal History of Scent, published in the UK in March 2012 and due out in the US in March 2013.

Séville ŕ l’Aube is a perfume filled with passion and desire. It is also the contrast between the joy of carnal pleasures and the dark, sombre aspect of the drama of Holy Week.

The story takes place in Seville, Andalusia. Incense-burners imbue the city with a spiritual atmosphere, as flowering orange trees diffuse their sweet, delicate perfume.

The lavender scent of Eau de Cologne emanates from the crowd, blending with the sweet smells of church candles that burn throughout the ceremonies. In this magnificent setting, a passion is born between a woman and a young Spanish man. The orange tree is the leitmotif of the perfume. Its green sap scent is present, blended with a fizzy aldehyde note that expresses intense emotion, from the outset. In this way, the fragrance opens with spicy, green and zesty notes. There is also a distinct lavender note redolent of the Eau de Cologne so typical of Spain.

This initial sensation gives way to the passion of the heart notes, which strike us like lightning... Enhanced by a jasmine accord and beeswax, the orange flower absolute reveals its opulence and stunning sensuality. The indole accord resonates with this bouquet of white flowers, revealing the fragrance’s eroticism, while the whole ensemble is enveloped in the sweetness of Siam benzoin.

Tinged with melancholy, the perfume’s base notes unveil a certain darkness, imparted by Luiseiri lavender from Seville, with its cistus, resiny, ambery notes. It echoes the lavender top notes, resonating harmoniously with frankincense to give a spiritual intensity to the entire perfume.

urgh, not sure how I feel about this. Lots of orange blossom. Gives an impression of orange and green. It's somehow too much, has a weird gourmand quality, like a big too-sweet meringue covered in candied flowers and orange leaves. Also a tiny trace of celery.

The dry-down is rather nice, but the orange blossom open did not really interest me much and the dirty jasmine in the early heart ruined it for me completely. A relatively strong finish, but not worth getting there. 2.5 stars.

Thisis such a gorgeous scent! My favorite orange blossom scent... Starts with a burst of green leaves then segues into a romantic sweet orange blossom. Lasts all day on me. Utterly fantastic!

I get a lot if benzoin in this one, and the same rooty, astringent carrot from Nuit de Tubereuse. The orange blossom note has a burned sugariness to it, so that it isn't airy, but syrupy. Definitely a fall perfume.

The opening is a lively orange blossom composition with some unusual notes. But that lasts only a few minutes. The drydown is a sweet, fairly generic orange blossom cologne. It's gone completely in 45 minutes on my skin, according to my housemates. There is one note in common with Nuit de Tubereuse that actually sears my nose briefly. No idea what the aromachemical is, but it can be a bit painful.

I don't really understand. This smells almost exactly like Nuit de Tuberose. I do like it but what's the point in an almost exact fragrance in the same line??

My favorite fragrance by the wonderful Duchafour. This is so well orchestrated and so tenderly beautiful. Rocketed to the top of my prodigious collection of orange blossom scents and thankfully its longevity is outstanding. Definitely fbw for me, on my Christmas wishlist.

I have a fetish for Orange Blossoms, unfortunately the Lavender note is not me at all, it reminds me of good bathroom cleaner. too bad.

I so eagerly awaited a decant, only to discover this smells uncannily like Fruity Pebbles. The opening (as much as I could ascertain with my sample) is smoky and sexy with the sweetness of orange blossom but the dry down is straight Fruity Pebbles. I was really hoping for smoky holy days and my garters getting tangled.
