Vanille Absolument
Eau de Parfum
by L’Artisan Parfumeur

The Scoop
Bertrand Duchaufour’s eagerly awaited take everyone’s favorite pod – L’Artisan Parfumeur’s fifth travel-inspired fragrance – is as far from a gourmand as he could possibly make it. Though Havana Vanille opens with a burning shot of smooth old rum laced with clove and crystallized fruit, it quickly melts into a gossamer veil of shimmering vanilla, so fresh it almost feels green. But Duchaufour’s masterstroke is grafting this sheer vanilla on to a soft tobacco accord conjured with three materials presenting a tobacco facet: tonka bean, immortelle and narcissus. This isn’t the sweet, heavy fragrance of vanilla-flavored pipe tobacco, but the leather-tinged, honey-hay smell of a Cuban humidor. The subtlest floral note weaves itself into the blend along with a hint of moist earth. As it sinks into its balsamic base, the vanilla takes on a sweeter tinge. This is a vanilla that’ll satisfy even the pickiest perfumistas, bursting with rich materials yet as ethereal as a wisp of smoke.

Previously called Havana Vanille, the name of the fragrance has changed, but the scent remains the same.

I was really disappointed when L'Artisan discontinued Vanilia and (presumably) replaced it with Vanille Absolument. VA is thin, boring, has none of the interesting depth of Vanilia (even though that was an edt and VA is an edp). Vanilla in Vanilia was represented predominately by the vanilla orchid whereas VA is just another vanilla (among thousands) on the market today. This doesn't do it for me at all.

Just finished my bottle and will be reordering. I love this scent. Not overpowering, can wear for any occasion. The tobacco and leather notes make this a more grown up vanilla. When I put this on, I feel comfort, the scent wraps around me like a favorite cashmere sweater.

looove this , its smooth , soft , warm , sweet vanilla but theres somethin else that makes me think of fall or colder months. u kno how when ur chillin at home and its getting cold out at nite in fall , like around october, and someone comes home and they been outdoors a bit and their clothes have that kinda ... crisp , cold air smell ? well thats what i get rite behind the vanilla . its a kinda weird metallic smell like when u 1st turn the heater on in winter . this vanilla is def somethin different from a generic vanilla but its still very much vanilla . i love wearin this yr round especially rite now in summer. man when this heats up on the skin when its warm and sunny out it smells good as hell. not jokin when i say ive had many random ppl next to me on the train and bus tell me "you smell soooo good". sometimes i ask em to elaborate and once i got "it smells smooth and sweet, but not like a cookie, its softer and not particularly subtle. is that vanilla? maybe ginger?" idk how she got ginger but anyway this is good stuff

An instant headache upon smelling. Way beyond vanilla to me. Tacky and sticky. Like syrup that has dried on the floor and now your shoe is stuck in it. I do admire the composition of the scent though - very complex and finely orchestrated.

I've been searching for the perfect vanilla for a long long time, and this one is the closest I've found. I detest sweet, dessert-like vanilla, but this is more of a pure extract with some woodsy undertones. I normally don't find L'Artisan fragrances to last long, but this one hangs in there for quite awhile. I've been layering it with Tom Ford Amber Absolute and Lutens Ambre Sultan - both great combos.

This is just gorgeous. The dry down is a nice and smoky vanilla with definite root beer undertones. It's FBW for me.

Works beautifully with my chemistry. My husband and kids compliment it, and my oldest son continually picks up different "moods" from it. Sometimes he's not sure if it's the same scent, because it can be smoky, or sweet, or even root-beerish (which I enjoy). Havana Vanilla is sexy, but, above all, a fun, interesting fragrance to wear.

Under-performing and unmemorable vanilla. Pipe-like tobacco is light underneath the over-sweet vanilla. Good rootbeer comparison, like a cream soda after smoking a cigar. Too sweet (read "young).

No vanilla to me! Just tobacco and a bit of something humid...

Too sweet for me - have thoughts of humidors and my father-in-law (he likes vanilla) - not what I want to smell like.

Vanilla extract and not much else. Way too sweet in the drydown to be unisex and it's not exactly subtle about it

It smelled just like grass when I first put it on. After it settled I could still smell a grass like odor but not as intense or bitter. Not much vanilla scent but it seems this would have smelled better on a man. If worn by a man, I might really like this but not on me. Glad I only had a sample. Too manly!

My husband and I tried this at the same time; it seems to give more perspective to the fragrances we try. The first few minutes were a whirlwind of surprise and delight. First, vanilla, instantly followed by what my nose picked out as hay, then the tobacco of a finely crafted cigar took over with just the lightest touch of smokiness. We put it on at about noon, and at 7pm, when it was still radiating sweet, smokey tobacco, we both decided that HV is a must have for our collection. Another dab at 7pm, and it was still with us the next morning. Astonishing lasting power, but sits very close to the skin--almost zero sillage, but for this frag, it really works. For reference, the hubby's favorite is Bulgari Black, and I usually lean to dense oriental & arabian scents (a la Montale or Al-Rehab).

L'Artisan Havana Vanille transports me - one dose and I am suddenly sitting next to James Wormold right before he orders a daiquiri. We wait in the hot sun, big-fendered cars crawl past us as the heaviest, sweetest vanilla mingles with the air drifting out of the packing rooms where cigars are rolled and wrapped. I feel the hard mosaic tile floor, the crushing weight of humid humanity in pressed cotton voile shirts. Beautiful women with lacquered coifs walk by. Rum hangs in the air, barely able to escape liquid form to evaporate lazily across the bar. What's the secret password? Vanilla.

I can get a tad smoky vanilla from this, like a very fine vanila extract without the raw mustiness of a kitchen-grade extract. at first it was sharp and the prominent notes were vanilla and narcissus. Then it softened up and sweetened up, just a slightly bit powdery. I can't detect the other notes in it, but I do know that it grew on me over the last few hours. Very femme. I may very well get a baby bottle of this.

overrated to say the least. I get egg nog and some weird roibos composition. No tobacco at all! How can this be compared to the mighty note vanille or rum soaked patchouli mix straight to heaven?

Got a sample of this and am not disappointed: I haven't ever thought, "VANILLA? SIGN ME UP!" It's been getting so much hype, though, so I felt a certain need to smell it. No bottle for me. I've been saying that this is like an overload of vanilla extract (which is nauseating in tight kitchens) but a below poster says it smells of soda. I can definitely smell a kinship to a root beer syrup. Oh well. Money to spend elsewhere.

Here's another one that hasn't resonated with me. This one is like smelling a vanilla scented cigar...the two don't seem to go together and neither did this scent!, it's odd! L’Artisan Parfumeur used to produce different and seductive fragrances, this one and Al Oudh have been too powdery, soft, and safe trying to appeal to the masses rather than to the aficionados.

As vanillas go, this is a really good one - earthy even. A touch of Patchouli would have been good. I really wish the L'Artisan perfumes lasted longer. I need to reapply a few times a day.

I approached this sample with a mixture of apprehension and anticipation. Apprehension because I am not a big vanilla fan; anticipation because it is, after all, from one of the great houses of the world AND created by a genius. I was pleasantly smitten, surprised, and kept getting this wonderful, blissful progression of notes. Nothing musty, cloying, dull, or insipid; just a wonderful rendition and a great variation on the the vanilla theme. Yet another debate to moderate!

I could not wait to sample this one, as I am a big Vanilla person. To my shock and disappointment, upon applying this, I got a cross between rootbeer and Dr. pepper...yes!! The softdrinks! So did not like this one...it does soften in the drydown to a softer vanilla, but there is a *twang* in there that bothers me.

at first i got the vanila/rum thing then another scent i could not distinguish it then moved into a creamy vanila but not those old vanila fragrances that made us all run for the hills when we heard vanila. soft .. pleasant... this line is an all time fave.

Beautiful vanilla blend, definitely made interesting with the additions of a little spice and musty cured tobacco. Yes, a bit less foody than usual, but for me the vanilla sweet-candy central note was dominant enough throughout the scent's development to define Havana Vanilla as a gourmand. If you're a vanilla lover, and want to add an elegant vanillic/gourmand with some complexity to your collection, this is delightful - but in the end it's still vanilla with a capital V. (I guess I was kind of expecting more from the L'Artisan house, composition, name and description...)

This is....weird. The beginning is amazing, for like 3 minutes or so. Then it gets very manly for 4 hours. Then it's amazing again. This is in no way the end all, be all of vanilla's, but it is interesting to sniff all day. But my man cannot smell it on me so it will be a no buy for me.
