Here's what other people are saying about Chene...
Yea on me this is definitely masc, but not too (I'm a relatively femme woman). Has a bit of that spicy dried fruits thing going, but very leathery oaky rummy. Smells kind of ivy league debate team, not in a bad way though?

I see there are mixed feelings about it being masculine or not. It all comes down to the wearer obviously because this is a Cedar and Oak bomb with a hint of rum on my skin. Very woody and masculine. This is a perfect fragrance for people who wants to transition to woody scents, but find pure cedar scents too dry and bold. Chene has a certain sweetness to it from the rum which is very likeable.

I have samples of a dozen SL perfumes and most of them smell so masculine on me. Maybe it's all the cedar and wood? I haven't quite figured it out. I love how complex they are, but there is always a note that I can't stand. With Chene it's the top note. It smells way too sweet but then it gives way to lots of spice and cedar, but mostly it just smells like an oriental/spice on me. I like it, but it's not something I would regularly reach for in the morning.

I think this is a subtle sweet fragrance. I'm not sure, though, because it lasts for about 5 seconds on my skin then disappears completely!

this smelled like cotton candy in the bottle and smells like cotton candy on me. one of the only lutens which i've used thus far that i immediately want off of my body.

At first I thought this was too sharp, woody, and almost sour, with a lot of cedar. As time went on, I realized it was more interesting than I had thought. It becomes kind of silvery and.....ashy? But in a good way. Something ethereal about this scent. Very light in throw but it's one of those subtle scents that is persistent even though it's light. I appreciate what people like in this but I'm not likely to hunt down a larger amount for myself.

I agree with the reviewer who said that this is quite possibly the most beautiful fragrance in the world. I don't care if it cost $1000.00 / bottle I would find a way. this is the kind of scent that lingers on clothes and smells amazing. the kind of scent you want to be "in". I WILl own a bottle of this. So far, I think i am in love with Serge Lutens. This fragrance is unbelievable. Please try a sample and you will see. I get NO masculinity at all, but I think that a man wearing it would smell ...I have no words for how he would smell. I love this, is the only thing I can say. I am giving it ONE HUNDRED STARS!!!!!

Funny, how scents change so much depending who wears them. Masculine? maybe for you but not at all for me. Here I have a beautiful, feminine pencil. This is so lovely and sweet without being cloying. I don't get much beeswax, but I do get dried fruits and the barest hint of rum. The way it melds with the pencil shavings really works for me.

Of the SL fragrances, only MUSCS KOUBLAI-KHAN supersedes this one... CHENE smells like a huge oaken library chair... The salubrious, hearty, virile aspects of wood are effulgent in this fragrance. The drydown is to die for... it smells like human skin, tanned after a long day at the beach. Perhaps it is on the masculine side, but women who love the woody family will eat this one up, it's that sublime.

This is a decidedly masculine fragrance, but like all Serge Lutens scents, it's mesmerizing in its subtlety. Oak moss and sap/forest smell come through loud and clear, but in the drydown, the fruits and spices come out more and lighten up the masculine hit. Though I might not wear it for myself, I put some on my husband and it was divine. It's very unusual smelling (I think all SL perfumes avoid the typical cliches) - a chypre for those who don't want a typical scent. Very woodsy, but in a good way.

A friend brought back a bell jar for me and I said oh dear this is mucho peligroso not like the wax sample, and I couldn't quite deal. in fact I remember writing a review of it on basenotes saying it reminded me of a story a great erotic artist told me about his childhood fixation for a man he saw at the local gym. when the hot hunk would quit the steam room, our young genius would enter and lick the slats on which he'd sat. The review was censored and... I got rid of Chene! The seasons they go round and round and I must say that Chene is one of my favorite fragrances. It's also great for layering with other lutens, such a Daim Blond - puts hair on their chest! I must say also, another interesting thing about this fragrance is that wearing it I've been complimented not on my perfume but on my smell. People have supposed that it was me giving off this intoxicating, and unabashedly erotic odeur! I don't just love it, I live it!

Oh, gosh - this is one of my favorite SL's and one of the most evocative fragrances imaginable. Chene is an ancient wooden beamed cabin, tucked away under a forest of ice-bound white birch in the frozen north of Finland or Siberia. If you can conjure the scents of that hut when its soul is quickened with a blazing fire in the hearth: strong herbs in the rafters, warming spirits in flasks, and crystalline sap everywhere, you can experience this dream that is an SL masterpiece. Now that Luckyscent carries it, I know it must be mine soon!
